Wigan St Judes ARLFC – Match Reports

1st TeamSaturday, May 19, 2018
St judes travelled away to top of the table Stanningley in what was a 1st v 2nd clash and it was Stanningley who came away with the bragging rights with a very controlled home win 33-18. In very hot conditions the early exchanges were even Olumide Oladele, Tom Owen, Baz Rothwell, Dave Fagan and Danny Fallon carrying the ball with intent and Nathan Bevan, Paul Pendlebury, Connor Parkinson Gav Rodden and Danny Clayton stopping Stanningley’s attacks. On 27 mins the deadlock was broken when a Judes error and indiscipline opened the door for Stanningley to score and take the lead. On 35 mins Judes finally broke Stanningley’s stubborn defence when classy centre Connor Parkinson broke free And dummied the Stanningley full back to score a great try, Fisher goaled 6 all. And before you new it Judes were on the charge again when from a mistake by Stanningley the resulting scrum on the Jude’s 25 mts line Gav Rodden broke away on a 75 mts run down the right to score a blinder of a try, but then cruel luck he had to leave the field of play with an injury, Ben Fisher goaled and Judes had a 12-6 interval lead which on the possession of play was probably just right. Then came a 10 min nightmare spell early in the second half as Stanningley scored 14 unanswered points and from this period the home side grew in confidence. Baz Rothwell was working overtime with Stanningley’s clever kicks along with Ben Jones and Daz Ball who both were very lively.Later in the game judes gave themselves a sniff of a chance when great hands from left to right on the Stanningley 25 Paul Pendlebury hit the gap to find Baz Rothwell who scored wide out, Ben Fisher goaled. But Stanningley still had more as they ran out 33-18 winners. Looking back Judes made 3 bad errors and on all occasions Stanningley scored 6 pointers. With 5 away games gone and only one win this is not promotion form.
Man of the Match NCL…Paul Pendlebury..solid Game at centre.
Man of the Match Sponsor…Baz Rothwell…another great performance.

Under 9’s – MaroonsSunday, May 20, 2018
It was a lovely sunny morning and there were a few sore heads from the previous night activities. You would have thought that the later start time would have helped the parents and coaches but it wasn't to be. There was a special guest on the sidelines today, hot footing it straight from the Royal Wedding with what appeared to be no sore head at all was Leeds legend Kevin Sinfield. The Maroons really had to show him what they were all about(even if he wasn't watching them)
Captain for the day Lennon got the ball rolling and Reuben like a battering ram made great yards through the Leigh defence. Then the ball was spread out wide to Jack and then to Ellis to open the scoring. The lie in appeared to help the Maroons. Some great tackling from Billy and Lennon ensured that Judes maintained the lead. Another great attack from Judes and great wingplay from Billy passing to Jack Worthy and he was on hand to double the advantage.
Some fantastic defence followed with Reuben, Zak, Edwin and Jack Worthy putting their bodies and often heads on the line to maintain the lead. Some great play from Leigh and they reduced the defecit. Heads did not go down and Judes were battling for each other, Daniel and Caitlin with some exceptional tackling as Leigh looked for the equaliser. It wasn't to be as Reuben charged through like a wrecking ball for a fantastic solo try. 3 1. Leigh would not be shaken off though and replied instantly. Some great platly on the final tackle and they breached the Judes defence. Then up the other end of thr pitch Ellis went on to score his umpteenth hat trick for Judes. There's no stopping this kid in full flow. 4-2. Then with a break in play for dog muck on the pitch this appeared to put the skids under Judes conceding two quick tries to level the scores. 4-4. More great running from Reuben, Billy, Lewis nearly put jack Worthy over again but a foot in touch stopped him. Then some great tackling from Teddy not once but twice saved amost certain try. I think he's still trying to get his breath back now after getting winded. Leigh then went forward again and managed to score afain to take the lead for the first time.At half time.4-5.
The second half snd it was Leigh back on the front foot and they extended their lead. Then a great run by Reuben set Jack away for his 2nd try of the game.It really was a see saw match. Some awesome defence by Shamus, Caitlin,Jack and Ellis but then Leigh scored again to make it 7-5.Ellis then got another try (I've lost count) and then Leigh scored again to lead by 2. After previous weeks you would have thought heads would have gone down but this seemed to inspire the Maroons. Reuben with another try and then Ellis with yet another to tie the scores at 8-8 with 2 mins to go then the moment of the match Billy Baxter gets the ball in hand and Liam Marshallesque sprints past the entire Leigh side to score in the. corner.9 8. Leigh then had one more chance but Maroons defence stood firm and they held oit for win. It really was a Magic Weekend.

1st quarter

Today see Jude’s at Oldham’s ground on a hot sunny day. Plenty of sun cream applied and plenty of water at hand the boys are ready to play. Jude’s play the ball first but it soon gets handed over to Oldham. Harrison and Deacon working great in defence already keeping the opposing team back. Back to Jude’s with the ball and some great passing from all the lads. Some good tactical play from Oldham but Jack Elwick makes some great tackles along with Jack Myers to stop any chance of a try. Some great breaks made by Harrison and Mason sees the ball going up the field. Mason breaks away again to score Jude’s first try. Jude’s working hard together with some fantastic defensive work and they manage to hold Oldham up just before their try line, stopping them once again. Jack Hill and Archie pulling out some beltin tackles today and helping to keep Oldham without a try so far. St Anne’s set now and they manage to find a gap and run along the wing to score their first try. First quarter ends one try a piece.

Second quarter

St Anne’s have the ball first and manage to make some good ground, only not making it through, thanks to Aston holding their lad back. St Anne’s go again and unfortunately manage to get over the try line. Back to Jude’s with the ball sees Oscar now making some good yards for us but before we can score it’s time to turn over the ball. Tadgh makes a good covering tackle to stop Oldham making any breaks. And another great tackle on the wing from Isac to stop any chance of St Anne’s scoring. Jude’s have the ball again and thanks to Kians passing and a good run from Archie Jude’s again get close to their try line. A great play of the ball sees Oscar with the ball, he side steps and makes it over the line for Jude’s second try. Unfortunately Oldham retaliate and make it over the line straight after us making it 3-2. Some more good running from Tadgh sees us close to our line yet again. Turn over to St Anne’s again and a try saving tackle from Jack Myers. Jude’s have the ball back with Aston breaking free but was put into touch, unfortunately it’s turn over again with another try for Oldham. 4-2.

Third quarter

Jude’s start with the ball a pass from Isac to Mason sees him break free within seconds and straight over the line for his second try. St Anne’s have the ball near their try line but Jack Elwick makes a great tackle to stop a try but unfortunately Anne’s keep at it and score again. 5-3. Oscar has the ball and try’s hard to run but the Anne’s lads are all over him, taking four of them to get him down. A knock on from Anne’s sees Jude’s with the ball. After some good passing and great teamwork from Jude’s it’s turn over time again to see Anne’s back over their line. 6-3. Kian has the ball and try’s to find a gap but is taken down at the try line and forced into touch. Judes are back in defence and thanks to Tadgh with three consecutive tackles St Anne’s don’t get far. Oscar and Cody working together to make some more beltin tackles.

Fourth quarter

Anne’s have the ball first but Jude’s manage to stop any tries with tackles from Harrison, Deacon and Jack Elwick. Jude’s get it together after not being themselves today and Jack Elwick makes it over the line. 6-4. Anne’s knock on and Harrison manages to drop on the ball for Jude’s to regain possession. After some good passing from all the lads and working as a team Mason breaks free and scores again for a hat trick. 6-5. Jack Myers breaks but is tackled. Next Harrison breaks but again is tackled. And finally Cody gets the ball and moves it forward. Some great attack and breaks in that set. Next set sees great tackling from Jude’s keeping Oldham in their own half. Great defensive work from Jude’s today but unfortunately we couldn’t bag the win.

Wigan St Judes V Oldham St Anne’s U7’s
Venue: St Anne’s 20/05/18
St Judes travelled over to Oldham on a very warm Sunday morning, as the players were warming up the sun was getting hotter. But that didn’t stop the boys from playing.
St Judes started well with a try straight from kick off from Louis Baker, they followed that by defending well keeping St Anne’s from scoring in their set.
Judes hit back hard with 3 tries back to back, Will Cobley ducking and diving his way through to score his try, George Stuart pumping his legs to out run the St Anne’s team to cross the try line, then Liam Wood pushing hard with 5 players on his back to cross for his try. All the Judes team worked hard in defence to keep the St Anne’s out from scoring, Will Cobley was a tackling machine and tackled anyone who was in front of him.
St Anne’s got lucky and managed to break through our defence to score a try for themselves. Aaron Barker used his quick feet to run rings around the opposition, he ran in and out of the players, then set off down the wing, only to be tackled just before the try line.
This then led to Ryley Flynn racing his way to the line to score a try. Again St Judes stole the show in the second half, an excellent offload from Toby Hutchinson led Thomas Atherton going over to score his try.
St Anne’s scored their second try of the game, before Judes racked more points on the board with Louis Baker going over for his second try, George Stuart running the length of the field to score his second try of the game.
Super Will Cobley again with his quick feet led him to score his second of the game. Riyaz Khan using an excellent side step to run full length and score over the white wash.
Judes kept up their defence, St Anne’s not letting their heads bow, continued with a couple of sets each with no score. Excellent tackling from Aaron Barker, Louis Baker, Liam wood & Harry Wiswell kept the boys of St Anne’s from scoring
Jayden Gaskell ran the ball in well to score a try. Then Freddie Selby with determination in his face running a full length try to conclude the game.
An outstanding performance from each and every player on an extremely hot day. The score line finishing St Anne’s 2 – St Judes 12
