Wednesday, 11 May 202212'sWigan St PatrickHome30-6St Judes U12s hosted local rivals, St Pats, in a thrilling mid-week cup clash at Parsons Meadow and came out worthy winners.

Judes were strong right from the start with an early try from Owen Gibson who darted out from dummy half to take advantage of a gap in the Pats defensive line.

This was quickly followed up with more points as Layton Dewhurst shook off three defenders to create the space for centre, Ben Green, to get over the line for a try.

Harvey Woolfenden pummelled through the Pats line at short range to put Judes in for their third try of the game.

Once again, all of the St Judes forwards showed their aggression and dominance gaining good yards in attack and keeping Pats at bay in defence, so much so that Pats only got into Judes' territory once in the first half. Unfortunately, Pats managed to score a lucky try from this single incursion to make the score 14-6 at half time.

St Judes were just as strong in the second half. Following a Pats handling error and a scrum in front of the posts, Ben Green skipped round the defenders to score on the left edge.

Judes soaked up the pressure and worked hard for each other. Owen Gibson, Max Wakelin and Layton Dewhurst were particularly lively in the middle and combined well to control the game and it wasn't long before the fifth try of the game courtesy of Jack Fullerton on the right edge.

The final try of the night came off the back of a perfectly placed grubber kick from Layton Dewhurst with winger, Alex Catterall, fighting off the Pats to defenders to ground the ball over the line.

With Layton Dewhurst kicking 3 of the 6 conversions, the final score was 30-6 and St Judes progress to the semi-finals.

After a great training session at Robin Park yesterday, all the children were ready to go this morning.
The team work they showed from the moment they kicked off was amazing. We defended well and attacked with determination that paid off in the end.
After some tough weeks, every single player pulled together and never gave up.
A well deserved win!

Sunday, 15 May 202218'sThatto Heath CrusadersHome22-25A warm sunny day down at Judes to welcome our opponents Thatto Heath in a game that had a Wigan v Saints derby feel to it. Like its name’s sake, the game didn’t disappoint and was a hard fought thriller from start to finish. Unfortunately, Judes were pipped at the post, but did hold the lead for the bulk of the game.

We set out our stall early, when Thatto tried us out on the wing, but strong defence from Logan and Roman, skimmed the opposition winger into touch, setting the tone for the rest of the game. We turned our resulting attack into points showing quick hands and letting the ball do the work, it went out to Ben, who showed great strength to not only break the line, but head to the whitewash with a defender all over him. Converted brilliantly by Brook, we couldn’t have asked for a more perfect start. Thatto then restart with a kick that goes out on the full and Judes had their second opportunity to build pressure and score more points. Again showing good hands down the line, this time the ball is out to Brogan who punched through the line to go over for his 4 points. Brogan again adding to his try tally and another consistently strong game, gained him the man of the match award.

Both teams surrendered possession on the next plays, maybe a few nerves on show. Judes then gave a penalty for a high shot and it’s just the opportunity Thatto needed to get themselves on the score-board. After another sustained period of penalties, Judes did so well to keep Thatto contained and after finally being awarded a penalty of their own, Judes started a new attack on half way. This time we send the ball out to the right to Nathan, who had stuck his hand up from our 16s to play and scored a really strong try on his 18s debut, again converted by Brook. Brogan takes the restart superbly, but on our next defensive set we are caught offside and gift ball to a grateful Thatto who capitalised by scoring their second. Both teams fight it out until half time, thankfully Judes hold on going in with a 16-10 lead.

Judes were copping some penalties from the ref which continued second half, even from the first touch of the ball. It was inevitable that Thatto were going to take advantage of so much gifted territory and their prop comes steaming onto the ball to bounce over and bring the scores level. Both teams throw everything at each other, both showing great defence and attack. Our defence in our own half was second to none, when time and time again we had to hold Thatto out. On our last tackle Roman did a cheeky kick over and the winger knocked-on, Judes try to hack the ball over the whitewash, but the winger held back our player and was lucky to stay on the field, the ref did award us a penalty and Brook was asked to take the 2, he held his nerve and nailed a difficult kick, extending our lead. Judes peppered their opponents line and on the fourth play we get the ball out to Calum P and there’s no stopping him when he’s heading for the line to score. Judes were soon turning attack into defence again and although they held firm, a knock-on close to your line is always going to be punished and Thatto pinched a 4 pointer at the side of the sticks and with the conversion, again brings the scores level. This was going to be a tense finish and disaster struck when the referee gave another penalty to Thatto right under the sticks which gifted them 2 and put them into the lead 22-24. Judes tried a short kick off that unfortunately didn’t come off and Thatto kick from halfway only to come up short when James Richy leaped up and knocked the ball back into the field of play and regathered. Judes weren’t giving up on this game even in the dying minutes. Judes did get on a roll, but again stopped by ruling a forward pass, then Thatto knock-on, but not given by the ref and continue on to score a drop-goal sadly sealing the win for Thatto 22-25.

It's gut wrenching that we lost this game with such a narrow margin when we’d both scored 4 tries. Cannot fault our lads effort, they put everything they had into this game and really did themselves proud, the game could have gone either way and was won in the end by a couple of late kicks. Thank you to Nathan and Scott who played from u16s today to help us out and played well and big Judes welcome to our new recruit George, a tough game to make your debut! Well Done to all lads, you should take lots of confidence from this game and even the opposition coach said they only pinched it at the end!
