Wigan St Jude’s “A” at the double!

Wigan St Jude’s A team finished off their 2016 glorious season adding the Grand Final Trophy to their silverware collection for the season. The team bond and commitment has been at the very core of an excellent year for the Parson’s meadow team. Their home ground has become a fortress on which they remain unbeaten this season; in fact, the regular season closed with success in 15 out of 16 league games. On the way through, scoring over 600 points and conceding only 164. The team built on this success progressing into the quarter final of the NWML trophy, pushing Division 2 winners Pilkington Recs A very close, narrowly missing out in a 32-24 away classic’s.

Jude’s head coach Neil Molyneux admitted “they have loved every minute!”. This team really believe in each other, from the U18’s players taking their formative steps in open age rugby, to the experienced players providing guidance support and leadership on the field...they are prepared to dig deep, tough it out and play expansive rugby when it’s needed.

The final started with a flurry of hard hitting defence from both teams, penalties and grand final nerves giving Bold Miners healthy field position and multiple opportunities to attack. Eventually, the defensive barrier broke and after only 15 minutes Jude’s were trailing by 10-4, only a try from Man of the Match Adam Lavin keeping the game close. As things settled, the normal service slowly returned, both teams posting a further score, Jude’s through powerful centre Barry Gregson after an offload from John Whalley and then a neat short pass from Alex Pilling on the line. It could have been all square at the break as Prop Forward Cal O Connor chased up a tremendous kick through under the posts, only for the ball to take a wicked bounce and over the dead ball line. Half-Time 16-10.

After the break the Division champions showed their faithful supporters at Widnes Stadium more of the rugby they had become accustomed to, scoring 18 unanswered points in a dominant second half. A magnificent try from centre Adam Lavin, whose powerful runs and defence caused problems for Bold all day set the tone, cutting across the line at pace and outpacing all the defence over 35 metres to score brilliantly. A welcome try for young lightning fast wingman Matty Langhorne, chasing down a deft little kick into the in goal from scrum- half Simon Meehan stretched the lead further. Ryan Ainscough powered his way through the line for the last score. Rob Collier, who has kicked outstandingly all season, added 3 conversions and one penalty to make the score at the final whistle 28-16 to Jude’s. The celebrations continued long into the night.
