A 18 point haul by Stand off Ben Fisher, along with a controlled mature performance, as he was rightly awarded the sponsors Man of the Match as St Jude’s brushed aside Askam in the play offs semi final at the Meadow 42-24. For the second week in succession this time Jude’s got it right against Askam from the onset and to be honest never looked like losing this game. Great performances across the park in particular the under 18s lads , Gary McMahon , Leon Harber , Robbie Horton and Ben Fisher all played with a confidence and a maturity beyond their years. Askam came with real intent and from the kick off they tested Jude’s attitude to defend, forwards Tom Owen , Olumide Oladele , Gavin Rodden , Nathan Bevan , Dave Fagan and Paul Pendlebury were all well up for it. On 5 mins Paul Pendlebury found Connor Parkinson who crashed over for a great opening try, Ben Fisher slotted over the two. Jude’s next was from a neat short ball from Gary McMahon to Gavin Rodden who burst clear to feed Daz Ball who did the rest, Fisher goaled. Minutes later Ben Fisher regathered his own grubber kick, all be it a lucky deflection to score by the posts ,which he goaled. Judes line speed was restricting Askams forwards, Tom Owen , Daz Ball, Ben Jones, Paul Pendlebury, Gavin Rodden, Nathan Bevan and Luke Barrett looked energetic in defence and the attitude to defend was spot on. Judes next try was from a Nathan Bevan break around the ruck where he found Paul Pendlebury in support and Paul did the rest with a well deserved try , Fishers reliable boot added the two . Askam did manage a score late on in the half with a neat grubber kick, just! But Jude’s looked well in the driving seat. Jude’s is players so often carried the ball with intent with Nathan Jones, Daz Ball, Barry Rothwell, Ben Jones, Gavin Rodden, Robbie Horton, Paul Pendlebury, and Leon Harber punching holes in the Askams defence time and time again. Gary McMahon, meanwhile was thriving behind his pack and Ben Fisher guided his team around the field, breaking up any momentum Askam had. And it was young Ben Fisher who set up Jude’s next try when a neat grubber kick through the line saw Gary McMahon dive on the ball to score, Fisher added the two points. Baz Rothwell was next on the score sheet diving over from close range on the left, Fisher goaled. Jude’s final try was the icing on the cake and great to watch when Ben Fisher found Gary McMahon who’s clever short ball to outstanding second rower Gavin Rodden whose power and pace did the rest with a cracking try, Ben Fisher Coolly slotted over the two points and a 100% with the boot 7 out 7. Askam did rally late on but it was far too late to spoil the party and Judes will now play Bradford Dudley Hill at the Meadow on the 14th October in the final play off game 2017.

Man of the Match..chosen by Askam    Gavin Rodden outstanding again

Judes  16-6 Halton

Judes were in the NWC Lancashire Cup Final today against their nemesis Halton Farnworth Hornets.  This game would see them crowned double winners with the League Championship already in the bag.  Judes seemed to struggle to get in their stride in the first half, they were doing all the tough stuff, but their go forward just didn’t seem right.  In all fairness Halton’s defence was very strong to contain us and they were first to strike on the scoreboard off a perfectly placed grubber kick.  Two dodgy penalties went Halton’s way and right at the very end of the half awarded them a penalty in front of sticks to gift them the extra 2 before half time, with Halton taking the first half 6-0.

Judes just couldn’t get the rub of the green and was this going to be one of those games?  Judes did get over the whitewash, but was frustratingly disallowed for a forward pass.  The lads heads could have dropped at this stage as the game became increasingly tense, but Judes being the professionals they are, dug in deep.  The turning point of the game came when Judes put in some fluid attack and a pin point accurate kick from Callum Silcock landed perfectly in the in-goal for Reagan Hunter to gather nicely and ground in the corner.  A superb conversion out wide, also from Callum Silcock, brought the game level.  This try sparked Judes into action and after a knock down by Halton, gave them a scrum which you just knew they would score from.  Halton tracked the ball well, but Judes were determined to keep the ball alive and got it out to Alfie Whittle, who showed some amazing footwork to jink his way through and score to put us in the lead for the first time.  Halton did immediately respond with a counter attack and looked sure to score, only for a relieving call from the linesman for a forward pass.  With the clock now ticking down this was a real nerve racking finish, as it was anyone’s game for the taking.  Alfie set off down the wing on a blistering run and gained good metres, but Judes made it hard for themselves in the dying minutes after knocking-on and giving Halton another chance.  Judes had to be strong to hold Halton out and did get the ball back for a final set.  This was definitely up the jumper time, but Junior had other ideas and with a never say die attitude, used his long stride to break through the defence to get Judes close to the line.  Lewis Pinder gathered the ball and just spied a gap and went for it, diving over the whitewash on the stroke of full-time to seal the game!  James Richardson kicked another great conversion and Judes were victorious with a final score 16-6.

No-one deserves this Cup more than these lads, they all work so hard.  Double Cup Winners at age 13, what a massive achievement and we are proud of each and every one of you.  A great advert for rugby league today, with both teams putting their bodies on the line.  Well done lads, we believe in you!  An amazing bunch of lads who go out there and give everything they’ve got……….well deserved winners!!

Today’s Man of the Match, chosen by NWC official was our superstar Lewis Pinder.  Lewis has won, the Man of the

Match in both Finals in consecutive seasons.  What a player he is and really does link the team together, always involved

in the tough stuff and loves to be involved in everything.  Congratulations Lewis!

Clock Face Miners 34-22 Wigan St Judes

This week saw us playing Clockface which are always good games and this was one of those,

Judes started slow and yet again allowed clock get ahead start of 12 points before Kian Stanton went over in the corner from a clever move and pass from lewis Banks for the first of his brace today. Clock then crossed before Alex Birch cut back inside to bring us within 6 points. Clock re-established their 12 point cushion before the break at 22 -10.

The second saw Judes open the scoring with Rohan Green opening up the clock defence, After repeated set Judes did concede a try before Kian Stanton ran in his second try of the game. With 5 to go Judes were only 6 points behind, unfortunately Clock went over with the match winning try but Judes didn't drop their heads and kept on going until the final whistle.

Today saw all the players give every ounce of effort they could, this is all we ask. When we ask players move into unfamiliar positions (Declan Boyd) they did without questioning  and gave everything.

If we take the effort we displayed today into next week's game that win will come!

Well done Judes!!!

Wigan St Judes U11s Golds 30-0 Saddleworth Rangers

The Golds welcomed down Saddleworth Rangers this week and put together their finest performance to date.

Having huge, talented forwards has always been a strong point for our new squad but an unstoppable big lad is not always what we want to see. Today the lads put on a show of wonderful hands, imaginative movement and absolute style...with a couple of Big Mal full lengthers chucked in (just to keep up with traditional play of course haha).

The game began with a high kick off from Saddleworth and a great take and return from Austin Daniel. Austin Weaved his way through the Saddleworth line and came out wide to hit an awaiting Aaron Bolton, a play we had practised over and over the day before in training. We were thrilled to see Aaron dive over, (confirming sometimes us coaches know what we are doing!)  Great rugby with well timed runs and accurate passing. The kick sailing just below

Our defensive display was something to be admired, great line speed and structure making it just impossible for the Rangers to force through. This continued for the duration of the match with The Golds not conceding a single point.

The next try was for The Big Guy, Malachi Price. Lovely passing between Austin Daniel and Keegan Mobey saw them hit Mal with another very simple training move. Mal burst through from 20 meters out and took it all the way. Austin Daniel adding the two.

More wonderful defence from The Golds forced the next try. Great marker play from Mal Price pressuring the Rangers hooker into a mistake. The ball flew forward with Mal snatching it from the air and again going the distance to get his second and Judes third right under the sticks. Dylan Gregory sailing the kick over with ease.

A resilient Rangers side refused to give in and pushed on in the second half trying their best to find a way through but it just wasn't to be and our opening try after the break came again through great passing and support play. Austin Daniel hitting the line before finding Daniel Nanyn on the inside who weaved his way through to dive over under the posts...taking a knee to the nose for his troubles! But after a great try he still managed a smile with Elton Paplekaj adding the extras

Hooker, Freddie Winnard, made good yards all over the pitch today, confusing the defence with quick decisions and good feet. Spying his chance to get over, he scooted the ball and with a convincing dummy, dove over untouched. The kick just slicing wide

Elton Paplekaj had been a nightmare for the Rangers in all aspects of the game today and a quick scoot saw him running hard at them with force once more, he burst through the line only to be caught 30m out, Aaron Bolton had followed the play though and as Elton went down in the tackle he managed to pop the ball up to an awaiting Aaron who took his chance and powered downfield for his second. Great team work. Aaron adding the extras

With 30 seconds left after Aaron's conversion, the Rangers took one drive and their talented half back put in an early chip over the top in hope to salvage a try back for his team. Sam Cunliffe had other plans though and collecting the kick out wide he flew all the way down the wing to finish the game in style. Kicking and converting the final conversion himself.

A true team performance with wonderful displays from every player. Dylan Gregory, Malick Niang, Elton Paplekaj and Aron Fleming standing out for wonderful defensive displays. It was great to see ever reliable Aron come in for more attacking play too.

Freddie Winnard, Keegan Mobey and Austin Daniel doing a great job controlling the ball and communicating the plays throughout.

Forwards Malachi and Jake not utilised half as much as usual with the concentration on our passing play but confusing The Rangers with great dummy runs and doing enough to let the backs work their magic.

Aaron Bolton, Sam Cunliffe, Tyler Foster and Daniel Nanyn were everywhere today playing with energy and enthusiasm. Running great lines and looking dangerous every time they had the ball.

Ryan Sweatman, one of our newest players, JUST missing out on his first try today but showing a huge improvement and going in for much more ball, growing in confidence by the session...i have a feeling the try will come next week lad! Well done.

Today's stand out player for the coaches and the opponents was fullback Austin Daniel who didn't miss a trick today. Eating up every challenging kick that came his way and giving the opponents a headache all the way through.

The player's and the parent's picked Aaron Bolton for a confident show today. Great support play and two cracking tries.

Top Tackler going to Elton Paplekaj. Elton's strength and passion puts him on the stats sheet week after week, always contending for this award and thoroughly deserved today.

Dylan's Dad, Paul Gregory, has created a new , fun team award..The Hit man Trophy! For the tackle of the game. Paul awarded this to Freddie Winnard today for a perfect, crunching tackle on a Saddleworth winger twice his size. Well done Fredster and many thanks to Paul Gregory for sponsoring a new trophy for the kids! Paul Gregory removals are a reliable and well priced removal company for household or garden waste. Portico 4-30 Wigan st judes golds

Today's game St Jude's travelled over to Portico Vine and the captain for today was Archie.

Portico started with possession and Jude's set the standard in defence and kept Portico pinned in their own half. Jude's started there first set with some strong running and with a good pass from Gabe saw Chizzy open the scoring.

Strong defence from Jude's and two big tackles on the bounce from Harrison put an end to Portico's second set. Turn over and Jude's saw Oscar make a great run down the wing. Next up was big Jack with his usual strong running who offloaded to Chizzy which gained extra yardage. Some more strong running and an offload from Chizzy to Aston saw Aston score for Jude's second try.

Portico started but again Jude's uncompromising defence made it difficult for Portico to make much progress down the field but with a nice pass they made a break, Harrison chased hard and tackled the runner. Archie made another good tackle forcing the attacker into touch.A great tackle from Aston finished Portico's attack.

Jude's next set saw some good passing from everyone and more strong running finishing this set with another try from Chizzy.

Portico finished the first quarter with possession but strong defence kept them scoreless.

2nd quarter and Jude's started with the ball and good running from Cody who offloaded to Tadgh. Hilly takes the ball in and offloads to Kyle but a good tackle manages to pull him down. Great run from Tadgh and an offload to put Hilly over for Jude's fourth try.

Portico held out by strong defence from Kyle, Cody, and Isaac put an end to Portico's attack.Judes started this set in good field position and a strong run from Cody making decent yards up the field. Better defence from Portico halted Jude's on the scoreboard.

Jude's strong defence making it very difficult for Portico to offer much of an attacking threat. Jude's last set of the second quarter saw a strong run from Tadgh who offloaded to hilly who offloaded back to Tadgh to make good progress down the field. A good pass out from Isaac to Kyle finished the set.

3rd quarter, Portico start with the ball and more great defence saw frustration from a couple of Portico players at the turn over, but Jude's sticking to the game plan applied more pressure with strong running and offloads causing plenty problems for the Portico defence. Turn over and a great double tackle from Hilly and Tadgh and another cover tackle from Harrison forcing Portico into touch put an end to their set.

A strong run from big Jack and next Chizzy who offloaded for Harrison to score.

Strong tackles from Chizzy, Aston and Kyle but a nice pass from Portico set them off down the wing with Hilly making the tackle to end the set.

Great footwork at the line from Harrison saw him make a break down the wing, next up was Tadgh to run the ball in, then Isaac made a good run to put Jude's in a strong position with Oscar scoring on the next play.

More tough defence from Oscar, Archie, Kyle and Tadgh and a big hit from Harrison finished Portico's set.

Turn over and Isaac passed to Archie who offloaded to Aston. Cody runs it in hard and crashes over for a try.

Portico finished the Third Quarter with a good run and managed to squeeze over for their first try.

4th quarter and Jude's start with the ball and strong running from Gabe offloading to Harrison then onto Hilly to run down the wing and offload to big Jack to score.

Portico held up by Jude's and a big hit from Harrison. A great tackle from Gabe on the last tackle forces the hand over. Great running from Oscar and an offload to Chizzy for another Jude's try.

Jude's uncompromising defence keeping Portico at bay and a few errors stop Portico gaining any momentum.

More good passing from Jude's and nice passing down the line for big Jack to score.

Portico start their set and a good tackle from Hilly then a great two man tackle from big Jack and Gabe. Portico pass out wide to the wing but got brought down by Aston for a turn over.

Chizzy up next with a big run but brought down by better defence from Portico, Big jack running strong who passed to Hilly who offloaded to Chizzy for him to touch down for another try.

More valiant attack from Portico but once again brilliant defence from Jude's kept Portico to just one score in the match.
