Rylands 22-40  Wigan St Jude's A

Wigan St Jude's visited Rylands in their first game for a couple of weeks aiming to take a further step towards securing the NWML Div 3 League title. With several players promoted to the 1st team, a new look side containing many youngsters and a few old heads produced an outstanding second half display to seal a tough 22-40 victory!!

It wasn't going to be all Jude's way, after a tense opening 20 minutes St Jude's found themselves trailing by 10-0 and looking at an uphill battle to take anything from the game. Jason Holland, who performed excellently in the first half got the visitors off the mark spotting a gap in the defence and shot over for a well taken try. Ben Fisher converted to close the gap to 4 points.

Tremendous defence from all the pack, in particular, PIlling, Ainscough, O'Connor,Clayton, Whalley and Whittaker kept the home side at bay until 5 minutes before the break when an inside pass to the loose forward exposed the cover defence. Half Time 16-6

It was the second half where Jude's got back to the type of rugby and performance we have come to expect, scoring 34 points to Rylands 6 and taking a deserved win, in what can only be described as awesome.

First to score was Ryan Ainscough, seven minutes into the half powering through the line and taking multiple defenders with him to touchdown. Ben Fishers trusty boot closed the score to 16-12. Only 3 minutes later, Jude's would take the lead for the first time, a lead they wouldn't surrender, directed around the field by evergreen scrum half Glen Hunt, Chris Pimblett made the most of a gap out wide to pierce the defence for a very well taken try. Fisher again goaled 18-16.

It was Jude's leading try scorer centre Pimblett who picked the next score, his second try following brilliant build up work from the backline. Once more the conversion was slotted over by Fisher. Next up, in what was contender for try of the game was rapid Young winger Matty Langhorne. In his debut appearance, chasing forward to follow up a beautifully weighted kick from Fisher he outpaced the cover defence to score superbly in the corner. Now, the team spirit and confidence was surging through the team, Parkinson, Lavin and Taylor taking the ball up strongly and Ant Wilkinson proving a real handful. It was, MOM Ryan Ainscough who would extend the lead further driving through the line and again taking several tacklers over the line with him underneath the posts. Fisher converted. The final points of an outstanding half came from flying wingman Langhorne who's "never say die" attitude saw the ball bounce up in the dead ball area and he gladly collected for his second score. Fisher again converted to make the final score 22-40.

Well done boys, very proud of your effort.
