Wigan St Judes ARLFC – Match Reports

1st TeamSaturday, October 6, 2018
Wigan st Jude’s lost against the form team in Div 2 Saddleworth Rangers when they met in the Div 2 Promotion Final On Saturday. All the damage was done in the first half with Saddleworths, bigger, older and more experienced players dominating for periods of the first half. But this very young St Jude’s side did get stronger and never gave up as the game went on, and to their credit kept the scores level in the second half with a great effort and the final score of 16-33 to Saddleworth was a bit more respectful to St Jude’s.

Judes entertained Chorley for the second time in a month looking to make it 4 wins from 4. Judes received kick off and instantly made good metres. A brilliant kick on the last was played at by Chorley to give Judes a repeat set. 2 plays later, Rio gave a dummy and took a Chorley player over the line with him to score the opening try. Judes then make an early error in the 3rd set to gift possession to Chorley 30m out. Good defence from Judes kept Chorley out and from their attacking kick Dylan Keller swept up superbly and raced the length of the field to score. Judes had Chorley's number down their left edge and needed to keep using it. From the next kick off, Judes managed to create more space through brilliant runs, they went down the right edge to pull the defence out of place and then shifted the ball quickly left to Rio who delicately chipped over for Liam to collect and score. Chorley managed to see some defensive sets out, but Judes line speed and defensive pressure was excellent and forced a scrum on their own 40m line. From the scrum, Declan broke and raced away to score the 4th try of the game.
Half time 20-0
The second half was a scrappy affair and stayed scoreless for around 15 minutes. Penalties from either side for ball steals and getting involved in an arm wrestle when it wasnt needed. Judes needed to get back to the free flowing play that we had in the first half. Right on cue Judes got a break down the left edge and Jake brilliantly draws Chorley in, quick ball to Liam who supplied Cameron Ashcroft with a great ball to crash over the line. Judes defended well and scrambled well at times too, it was important to keep the nil at the late stage of the game. Approaching the end of the game and Connor made back to back carries and a barnstorming break, only to get an offload off to Kian who skips through the Chorley defence to score under the sticks. With 3 minutes left Chorley finished with the ball near Judes line, but they didnt have enough to through the brick wall defence. Game finished 30-0 to Judes. Fantastic from every player there today.
Onwards to next week.

Tries - Rio Roberts, Dylan Keller, Liam Ryding, Declan Gregory, Cameron Ashcroft, Kian Johnson.
Conversions - Leon Trafford 3

Awards - Captains Choice - Owen Melling...has had a tough week personally, but has turned up and trained all week in prepration for today's game. The lads were made up with his performance and deserves his award.

Most Improved - Lewis Banks...best game he's played all season. Great line speed and superb work from marker.

Man of the Match - Connor Dalton-Roby...excellent in both attack and defence today. He is the toughest player to get down and can control the ball brilliantly when offloading. Well done Connor.

Not sure what to expect from the boys today, they normally suffer from a cup hangover and playing Waterhead back to back, thought our opponents would be all out for revenge, astonishingly it was the total opposite. Judes made the perfect start with aggressive defence forcing the knock-on, then Callum’s kick on the last was spilled by Waterhead and gifted us the scrum in a dangerous position. Harvey Makin came steaming onto the ball and a fearful leg pump carried him those extra metres to get over the line and score. Callum puts another good kick in on the last and superb follow up defence traps Waterhead in the corner, then forces them into touch. Judes build as they do with our forwards, then switch the ball out wide into Reagan Sumner’s hands who spies space in the corner to dive over and score. Judes knock on from a kick and put themselves under pressure, but awesome defence today snuffed out everything that Waterhead threw at us. Judes were soon attacking and Lewis was reaching over the whitewash, but good goal line defence deny him. Waterhead bring the ball back and Eliot sneaked into Waterhead’s line and sniffed out a great intercept to turn the ball over. Callum Silcock was red hot with the boot today and controlled everything on the park. Two pin point kicks ensured Reagan Sumner a brace of tries, who was ever present to chase up and pounce on the ball to score, racking up his hatrick! After a Waterhead restart that found touch, Judes finished the half with massive defence forcing Waterhead to turn the ball back over on the stroke of half time, putting us 20-0 to the good.

Judes continued their commanding play in the second half and a good grubber from Callum couldn’t be taken cleanly and although Judes were held up short, more huge defence forces the turnover and yet another superb high kick from Callum, was plucked out of the air by Connor Hill perfectly, who had wide open space to dive over and score. On the restart, a great break by Lewis set the platform for Callum again to pick his spot to kick over which landed perfectly into Reagan Sumner’s hands who darted to the line, to rack up his unbelievable 4th try!! Judes have a bit of a blip in the next set turning the ball over and giving back to back penalties, but our defence didn’t let us down, as forceful contact gives us the ball back. It was only short lived though as the Waterhead prop took matters in to his own hands and put in a brilliant chip, chased the ball, picked up on the fly and scored a great consolation try. As we approached the last set, Junior was shouting for a big effort defensively, but Callum had different ideas when his restart bounced over the dead ball line for the drop out. Judes weren’t finished just yet and Junior Nsemba who was asking for a big effort was now attacking and came on an arching run and just skipped his way through all the defenders to score at the side of the sticks. Conversion taken successfully by Callum Silcock, brought the game to an end with an exceptional Judes win 34-6.

An incredible performance from the lads today, they could be forgiven for not performing to their best away from home, after they put everything into the Lancashire Cup Final last week, but they went out and showed how heroic they really are. Last week they reached for the stars, this week they landed on the moon!! What an outstanding bunch these lads are, the game was thrust on them last minute and after only one training session this week, turned up and just bossed it!! Away performance of the season so far!

Today awards to:

Outstanding Effort: Reagan (Reggie) Hunter, nicknamed sick note, wearing more bandages than a mummy, but wow, this lad can certainly sniff out a try or 4!! Absolutely outstanding finishing skills today.

Outstanding Effort: Callum Silcock, this lad must have been close for Man of the Match, he was incredible today, his game management was second to none. Kicked our opposition to death and created 4 out of our 7 tries.

Man of the Match: Lewis Pinder, a major force in our team, always gives his all on that pitch. Has been asked to try a few different plays and has executed them to perfection. Must have made at least 4 clean breaks today, which secured him the man of the match award.

Leigh miners golds 24- wigan st Jude’s golds 36

Our Jude’s golds boys were back over to Leigh miners today
this time to play their golds team in what would be a true clash of the golds
Judes lead by captain of the day jack hill!! In what has become our typical playing style it took the lads 10 mins to warm up and wake up going down 16-4 in the first quarter. The lads in the second quarter fought to bring it back with strong hard runs from the forwards and exceptional passing as usual from jack myers! After this it was try for try and miners who showed some brilliant skill needed to be stopped from taking the win! The lads dug deep, pulled together and worked hard as a team backing each other up and in the end it was passion and pure grit that won Jude’s the game! Well deserved today lads!!
