Wigan St Judes 40-40 Beverley

14 tries and 12 goals and the final score of 40 all says it all for entertainment as St Jude’s welcomes Beverley to the Meadow in the NCL Div 2 game on Saturday. In a very eventful game ,which at times was like a game of tick and pass as the lead changed hands several times and the final score was always in doubt as defences where none existent. Connor Parkinson, Olumide Oladele, Aaron Smith. Joey Brady, Josh Hill and Reece Storey on his debut were on their game. Jude’s Try scorers were Connor Parkinson 2, Joey Brady 2 , Scott Robinson 1 , Josh Hill 1 and Gavin Rodden 1 and 6 goals from Danny Fallon. Late on a serious injury to a Beverley player stopped the game for 20 mins and the referee made a decision to switch to the other pitch for the final 3 mins and the game restarted with a Jude’s attack and Connor Parkinson’s late try under the posts snatched a remarkable draw.

Wigan St Judes 32-14 Chorley Panthers

Judes attention turned back to the League with a visit of Chorley to the Meadow. The lads were at 13 players and we ready to go! The game started with both teams trading sets until Judes were down in Chorley’s 20 and the ball was passed quickly left to right to TJ who went over for the opening try. Converted by Leon. Judes tails were up and they attacked with pace and power. Debutant Logan Walls, made a well timed pass to Liam on his left who raced in from half way to score on the left edge. All the kicking practice paid off as Leon slotted the conversion over from the touchline. The game was strongly contested by both teams, but on a kick return, Judes knocked on and a few plays later Chorley went over for their first try. Just prior to half time, Judes had a scrum 10m out, the ball was passed quickly left to right and Jake crashed over.
Half time 16-4
In the second half, Judes wanted to push on and did so early on with a break from Jake who ran 70m to score. Then followed a period of letting Chorley back into the game with a soft try from the base of a scrum. Judes just didn’t move in and Chorley took advantage. Following that, in the next few sets Judes successfully defended 3 consecutive sets and 18 tackles, forcing a knock on on the last. As time was drifting away, Judes scores through Jordan sneaking over on the right edge. Then Chorley went in again only for Judes to cancel it out with another well timed pass from Logan to send Dylan Foster racing 70m away.
On that the game finished, brilliant performance by everyone. The biggest positive being mindset and voices !

Wigan St Judes v Crosfields

Crosfields could only muster up 9 players so Judes were awarded the points. However, as the Judes team had travelled over to Warrington, both parties agreed to play with Judes loaning 3 players to make a game of it. Credit to the Judes lads for having a game for the opposition in what was a pretty decent opposed training game.

Leigh East 46-0 Wigan st Judes

Today we played at Leigh East on a unfamiliar pitch, which a depleted squad of 11 players took on Leigh. Judes struggled from the start as injuries started to take it toll, first ot was Cody then Jack, Rohan and finely Scott.
With judes reduced 10 and lads carrying injuries, a couple of lads stood up to be counted namely Callum Siddeley who had great game as a stand fullback.

The lads gave all they could but were fighting a tidal wave and in the end Leigh who always had the extra man took the 2 points with a final score of 46 - 0.

Great effort lads!

WIGAN ST JUDES GOLDS: 28-16 LEIGH MINERS RANGERS

Today the Golds travelled to Leigh to face the formidable Leigh Miners, the most well-known team at our age group due to their phenomenal run over the last few years, dominating the league and playing outstanding rugby. I never want to bet against our boys but today we were most certainly the huge underdogs, not that our boys minded, they were full of confidence in the week leading up to the game and on the morning relaxed and looking forward to the match.
The game began with Miners driving hard and immediately challenging our try line, the boys scrambled to tackle the rapid Miners pack as they powered down our wing. Aron Fleming put in a fantastic shot to stop an almost certain try, the Miners forward flying towards touch flicked the ball back inside the field of play, snatched quickly by centre Taylor Kerr ending the quick Miners threat. Judes drove the ball back with Keegan Boyd making amazing yards before being pushed to touch. Miners weren’t back on the attack long though as great marker pressure from Taylor Kerr and Tom Hill forced the Leigh half to knock on on the half way line. From the scrum hard drives from our pack Luis Houghton, Malachi Leo Price and Jake Hare saw Judes make great yards upfield. From 15 yards out Oliver Wright and Corey Roden linked perfectly to spread the ball wide to Judes second rower Taylor Kerr, Taylor made great yards before popping the ball to an ever-supporting Mason Fillingham at centre who stepped back inside to dive down right in the corner. Great hands, Great try. The kick just sailing short 0-4

Following the great start, the ball went from try line to try line. Both teams giving their all in both defence and attack. Powerful tackles from Keegan Boyd and Luis Houghton knocked the Miners pack around and Mason Fillingham and Aron Fleming dominated as the ball was continuously pushed down their wing. Both teams seemed unable to push their way through before Judes fumbled the ball on our own line after a cracking grubber by the Leigh half back, giving Miners a scrum feed on our own line they pushed over for their first try. Converted, Leigh were in front 6-4

Judes kicked long from the restart and just two tackles in Keegan Boyd managed a brilliant one on one ball steal to regain possession for Judes in the Miners half. Judes spread the ball left and right unable to break the strong Leigh pack. A Miners centre fumbled as he attempted to intercept a Judes pass, gifting Judes a fresh set of six on the Miners’ line. One hard drive was all it took for outstanding loose forward, Luis Houghton to push over on the right wing. Golden boot Corey Roden sinking an extremely difficult kick from touch 6-10
Again, the sides went set for set both looking threatening each time. A wonder hit from Malachi Leo Price forced the Miners’ centre to knock on and hard drives from Keegan Boyd and Jake Hare got Judes back into great field position. Miners were caught offside on this fast attack and using the wiped tackle count, the big boys came to crash over the line. Malachi Price drove the ball just yards away from the white wash before our Albanian wonder, Elton Paplekaj, knocked off four Miners defenders to crash over just left of the sticks. Corey Roden adding the extras and going in at half time 6-16

The second half started in the worst way possible with Miners nipping in for two quick, unanswered tries. Judes had lost their lead with the home side drawing level very quickly. We needed to wake up fast. 16-16

After Miners’ second try our lads picked the pace back up and after a superb, long kick off from captain, Oliver Wright, the Judes line flew down field and pinned Miners in just yards from their own line. The defence worked harder than ever before forcing Miners to kick early. Judes pushed down field with Corey Roden’s grubber kick just bobbling out of field. Again, the lads pressed down on Miners with hooker Tom Hill fearlessly grappling with much bigger lads and Luis Houghton dominating from marker. Corey Roden tackling everything coming his way partnering up well with Taylor Kerr to stop the Leigh side from picking up any momentum. Leigh attempted to chip over our eager pack but winger Aaron Bolton was ready and retrieved the ball from the air and made a fantastic, weaving 40 yard return with it, a desperate fumble by Leigh to grab Aaron during this attack saw Aaron tilted in the air. Luckily Aaron was fine but Judes couldn’t advantage of the fresh set of six as the Miners held strong. The Judes tails were up though and another massive defensive set saw Miners make no yards with their kick only making it to half way. Retrieved by a calm Mason Fillingham who drove it back down field. Judes were pressing now and in a great power play, Elton Paplekaj forced his was over the line for his second. Putting Judes in front with ten minutes to go. Corey sinking the kick with ease 16-22

Our nerves were absolutely shattered now as we went into the next set, pushing hard but not managing to challenge the line, Corey Roden played safe and put the ball out for a scrum down in good field position. Confident again in their defence Judes stayed like a brick wall, refusing to the broken. Luis Houghton hit with devastating force and really had the Miners rattled. They begin to force the play and Aron Fleming managed to intercept at the vital time to grab Judes the ball back in the Miners half. Keegan Boyd scooted and was tackled just inches from the line. Corey and Oliver spread it all the way left before big Mal Price drove from left to right handing off defenders and crashing over for the final try of the game. Converted by Corey Roden. 16-28.

Today was a true team effort. The lads worked together, communicated well and refused to be intimidated by an outstanding Miners’ outfit. From the off the lads showed belief and resilience and played with pride and composure. As a coaching team we have never been prouder. Every child played out of their skin. Freddie Winnard, Aaron Bolton, Aron Fleming, Mason Fillingham and Dylan Gregory held well today, ensuring a good line at all times and an even spread that proved extremely difficult to break. The pack were as devastating as always with Big Mal price, Jake Hare, Luis Houghton, Taylor Kerr and Keegan Boyd bossing the field today. Hitting unapologetically hard and causing spills all over the park. They ran hard too, winning the floor well with Jake Hare having a personal best performance playing with determination and grit. Oliver and Corey directed the play selflessly providing well-timed and precise passes and kicking beautifully throughout and ever reliable Tom Hill was fast behind the ball with safe hands and great link up play with his backs. Last but not least, Austin Daniel looked controlled, calm and clean at the back. Taking everything in his stride and collecting everything that came his way, making wonderful cover tackles whenever required.
These kids don’t play with each other, they play for each other. Best friends, brothers and talented beyond their young years. Superb!
