Wigan St Judes ARLFC – Match Reports

1st TeamSaturday, June 2, 2018
NCL Man of the Match Paul Pendlebury scored 3 tries as St Judes overcame a spirited West Bowling side to keep Judes right up there in the promotion battle as they ran out 38-12 winners at the Meadow. Gary McMahon was the chief tormentor for Judes as they ran in a total of 7 tries and to add to that ,kept West Bowling scoreless in the second half with only12 men. St Judes first try was on 5 mins when Full Back Baz Rothwell slotted a neat kick through for centre Connor Parkinson to score in the corner. On 10 mins Paul Pendlebury got his first try when from a scrum just inside the visitors half Gary McMahon hit the blind side and Paul Pendlebury provided the assist, but Paul still had plenty to do as he sliced through to score, Ben Fisher goaled. Mins later Prop Luke Barrett was held up over the visitors line as Judes forwards Danny Clayton, Daz Ball, Dave Fagan, Baz Gregson, and Leon Harber battered the visitors line, but to there credit West Bowling held firm and late on in the first half managed to score a great try and right on half time managed to take a shock lead 10-12.The second half Judes had to make unforced changes as Ben Fisher was injured and a player having to leave the field of play, but Judes probably put in there best performance so far as they ran in 28 unanswered points. On 43 mins Gary McMahon found Danny Fallon who’s inside ball to Paul Pendlebury for his second try started the onslaught, Fallon took over the kicking duties has he slotted over the two. The identity of the tormentor and chief didn’t change as Gary McMahons inside ball to Paul Pendlebury who burst through to score as the West Bowling Defence struggled to hold him for his third try, Fallon goaled. Another scrum on the right saw Winger Ben Jones get over in the corner as Judes turned the screw.Nathan Bevan meanwhile was thriving behind his pack and on 65 mins his show and go from dummy half saw him go in under the posts, Fallon slotted over the two. Judes were enjoying plenty of possession late in the game and Nathan Bevan finished Judes scoring with a sneaky dive over try which Danny Fallon goaled. A very good second half display with 12 men for the last 25 mins by Judes but still room for improvements as the next two games are away at East Leeds and Askam and both will play a big part in Judes season.

Man of the Match NCL Paul Pendlebury….very lively display.
Man of the Match Sponsors Jimmy Moss chose Gary McMahon….very Mature Display

Judes 0-24 Oldham St Annes

St Judes suffered only their second defeat of season, losing 24-0 away to Oldham St Annes in their NWML Division 2 clash.
The team didn’t have the best preparation for this match as last minute player withdrawals and traffic issues on the M62 that held up the team coach and meant that the team arrived 10 minutes before he scheduled kick off.
However, despite this the team did deliver a gutsy and credible performance against a very strong Oldham side, restricting them to only one score throughout the majority of the game.
In the the end the home side did run out eventual 24-0 Winners.
Credit must go to all players as the effort, and determination, shown by all was exceptional.
Reece Matthews, Ant Wilkinson , Tom Gallagher, and James Ward all stand out performers for St Judes.

Waterhead Warriors 14 v Wigan St Judes 12.

This morning Judes made the long journey to Oldham.

On a very hot morning Judes started off well against a very strong Waterhead team who last time we played beat us convincingly. The Judes played well and both teams attack and defence were evenly matched. It was deep into the first half before Waterhead broke the Judes defence. Both Rohan Green and Layton Cottom made breaks down the centre only to be stopped short. At the break there was only a try separating the teams at 4 - 0.

Early in the 2nd half Rohan Green opened up the Waterhead line scoring a try which was converted by Lewis Banks. Waterhead hit Judes with a well worked ball to the wing by using the overlap, then Judes allowed Waterhead to stretch the lead to 8 points when stopping for a knock on that wasn't given and Waterhead played on. This only seamed to energise Judes, Muhammad Abassi thought he had started the Judes revival only for the ref to deem it both elbows down and disallowed the try. Judes continued to hit the Waterhead line and they couldn't get out of their 20, although we didn't help ourselves as we spilt the ball several times on the 1st tackle. Eventually, Judes worked the ball out to Scott Finney who crossed the line with minute of the game remaining with Lewis converting, it was all on for Judes to snatch the game. On the last play of the game Kian Stanton put a smart chip and started a foot race for the ball but Waterheads full back managed to kick the ball dead to end the game.

We the coaches can't fault the Judes effort today, when they went behind instead of letting their heads drop they kicked on and really tried to win the game.

Well done to Judes and also the two debutantes today Owen Dewhurst and Jack Doran.

Under 12’s - Gold’sWednesday, May 30, 2018
On Wednesday night, the boy’s welcomed down Wigan St Cuthberts in what had become the most hotly anticipated game this season due to many of our lads going to school with the Cuthies lads and the banter flying back and forth. This Cuthbert’s squad being extra special to us coaches as they are our old team and we have missed them a lot and know what great, capable kids they are.
The match started in the best possible way for our lads. Elton Paplekaj stopping a hard grubber going into touch from the kick off, this was a tough ask for Elton as he has been openly nervous about kick offs and has worked on them for weeks at training. He used his feet to stop the ball that was bouncing awkwardly, picked it up and ran the down the wing. With one hard drive he managed to get all the way to the Cuths line and score our fastest try to date at just 13 seconds! Converted by Keegan Mobey.
Oliver Wright always impresses us with his precise and well planned kicking game but tonight he was better than ever before. His long, difficult kick forced another Cuth’s knock on. From the scrum the Cuthberts lads kept out three Judes drives before quick feet Austin Daniel looked to go left but then dove right stretching out to get the ball on the Cuthbert’s line for Judes second try. Adding the extras himself.
From the restart, another phenomenal kick from Oliver Wright caused a spillage from the Cuth’s backs. Ever-ready Aaron Bolton dove on to the loose ball and quick hands from him and Austin saw the ball whipped out wide to Oliver Wright who crashed over in the left-hand corner – Deservedly so after his kicking foot had caused all three early tries! Adding the two himself.
Fourth kick off was collected well by safe hands John Joe O’Riordan Riley, a player we had discussed before the match to keep an eye on due to his fast feet and great step! An over eager eye kept on him obviously after we stripped the ball from his hands and the visitors were given a penalty! The Cuth’s kicker went for yards but the ball floated high and didn’t quite make it to touch. Pounced on by Judes winger Freddie Winnard who returned well and got the ball back inside for his team. Austin Daniel drew in the Cuth’s line before hitting the big man, Malachi Leo Price, for his first run of the game. Mal managed to cross the line after a fearless run, batting off defenders as he powered over. Dylan Gregory adding the extras.
Oliver’s next kick was long and powerful going over the heads of many of the opposition. A little panic from good Judes pressure saw the ball kicked out dead by the Cuths backs. Cuthbert’s talented full back, Harrison Stanton, got great height and length from the drop out kick and his team followed it up with good line speed. The ball was returned back at them by Malick Niang who was stopped around 20 metres out. Judes tried another forward, hitting Jake Hare, who crashed down toward the line but a fantastic team effort from the Cuth’s defence saw him held up unable to get the ball down. Frustrating for Jake but a quick scoot from fellow forward, Mal Price, sealed the deal and was just enough to get Judes through and over after a fantastic defensive effort from the green and golds who were unlucky to concede this time! Converted by Elton Paplekaj.
Oliver’s next kick had serious height but Cuthberts Liam Sheridan managed to take it well under massive pressure from the Judes pack thundering his way. Cuthberts spread the ball well and huge shots were needed from Elton Paplekaj to stop Cuthberts Powerhouse, Tyler Kelly and his outstanding, hard runs. Luckily, Judes managed to stay organised and keep the strong Cuth’s runners at bay. Pinned into their own half, Harrison Stanton put in a long, hard kick upfield working for field position and his Cuthbert’s pack chased it down well. Oliver Wright had tracked back for Judes though and managed a great return from a composed collection of the ball. Jake Hare, Malick Niang and Austin Daniel made great yards before Elton Paplekaj stormed down the wing and over the line but a quick thinking Cuthberts pack hit him hard forcing the ball to pop out of his hands at the last second! No try. Turnover! Superb Cuthberts forward, Stephen Riley, drove the visitors away from their own line and a sloppy tackle from the Golds saw Harrison Stanton gain even more yards kicking the ball long and finding touch from the penalty. A well organised Judes line had to give their all to stop the Cuthberts fierce drives, seeing huge tackles from Mal Price, Oliver Wright, Dylan Gregory and Aaron Bolton. On the fourth tackle fantastic pressure from marker Sam Cunliffe saw the Cuth’s attacker rushed into a decision. A quick grubber through that bobbled between legs before being cancelled out by Jake Hare of the Golds. Judes were back on the attack and a perfect flat ball from Keegan Mobey split the line for the big guy, Mal Price, who went the full length of the field to score under the sticks. Conversion just sailing under taking us into half time.
At half time we praised the lads on their formation and working together as a team and asked for more of the same in the second half.
The second half started with a long Judes kick collected and returned well by Cuthberts. Great drives from Kaiden Foster and Hayden Foubister saw Cuths push forward from the off. Then came a stand off between the forwards as our props attempted to muscle big, brave Alex Slater to the ground. Unable to make enough ground, good thinking from Ellis Groves saw the ball kicked long to take the pressure off Cuthberts. Trusted Golds Fullback, Austin Daniel, took a fall but managed to keep hold of the ball and drive it back for Judes. Hooker Tom Hill weaved in and out the Cuthberts defence making great yards upfield, finished off by Elton Paplekaj who dove over for his second of the match. Converted by Aaron Bolton.
Another great Oliver Wright kick off was collected from the air by Cuthberts Hayden Foubister who drove the ball back in with great pace and strength. It took a massive defensive effort from Judes to contain Cuthberts once more and force the early kick. Again this landed in the trusted hands of Austin Daniel who returned with a huge weaving run only to be stopped by a cracking tackle from the strong pairing of Cuth’s Daniel Alker and Harrison Stanton. A few more drives had Judes just inches from the Cuth’s line and a quick scoot from Tom Hill was enough to push over once more. Tyler Foster converting.
A short Gold’s kick off saw the ball bounce back into the hands of a chasing Aaron Bolton. The lads spread the ball well and hitting winger Tyler Foster on the left he looked sure to score but great defence from quick John Joe Riley and strong Cuthberts centre Bradley Birch saw the ball fumbled and Cuthberts back in possession. The visitors tested our wings next forcing Oliver Wadeson and Malick Niang to make crucial tackles on the right. Spreading the ball on the last, Cuthberts looked to be running it with force and an unbelievable stop from Malaki ‘Paddy’ Cullen on the last was a certain try saver for the Judes!
Fantastic hands from the turnover and great organisation from Tom Hill saw the ball passed between him, Keegan and Austin at pace. Elton Paplekaj providing the prefect dummy for Austin to go over untouched. Kicked by Jake Hare.
Judes kicked off for the final time in the game and a great take at pace from Bradley Birch almost saw him through the Judes lines with winger Judes Freddie Winnard holding onto his shirt for dear life until help arrived! An offside call against Judes (followed by a bit of lip!) Saw Judes walked 20 metres by the ref and Cuthberts attacking again in dangerous position. Talented hooker Ellis Groves effort saw him inches from the line with only a superb cover tackle from Austin Daniel stopping him from going over. The turnover saw Mal Price run from post to post to score the final Judes try under the sticks. Converted by Malaki ‘Paddy’ Cullen.
As we said to the kids from the start, today’s match was never about the score. It was about getting two teams together and showing them that local club rivalry should always remain fun and positive.
Cuthberts Team manager Jenny Riley working hard to get a date sorted with us and Sean Foster giving a lovely speech to all our kids at the end. Very classy guys. Sean even letting me sneak into the Cuthies huddle before the match for a quick pep talk (For old times sake!)
The kids chatted throughout the match and sat down to eat together after it. It was a lovely sight. The chapter closed with the children playing and laughing as mates should. We all deserved that moment of happiness after a long 18 months. Judes and Cuthies kids you did us proud tonight!

Judes 30-0 Bury Broncos

Today Judes travelled to Bury Broncos . What a lovely morning to be playing Rugby .
Judes received the ball from the kick off and took it straight at Bury . Bury held out the Judes attack and brought it straight back at them.
Judes kept them out and regained the ball , taking it straight at Bury who couldn't stop a strong Judes attack .
This set the scene for the rest of the game . Judes line was broken a few times by Bury attack but Judes were always in control .
Bury never gave up and kept trying to the final whistle but the Judes team were just too strong and too well organised. Throw in a few full length trys and some hard tackles n Judes had it in the bag .
Everyone of the players scored a point today which is always great to see.
