WIGAN ST JUDES ARLFC - MATCH REPORT - ROUND UP

1st Team

A hat trick of tries from centre Connor Parkinson combined with an outstanding try saving tackle from loose forward Gavin Rodden sealed this cracking win against Local rivals Leigh East 32-22 at the Meadow. Early signs were very encouraging for Jude's when from there very first real attack Dean Hunt put in a pin point high kick on the left were Scott Robinson rose above the Leigh East defence to gladly accept the ball and score wide out, which he also goaled 6-0. Leigh East came right back with great flowing rugby and Jude's defence was really tested and confidence is a great thing when one week you will defend your line with effort and just do a job and then when confidence kicks in you defend with controlled aggression and massive hits to knock the attackers out of their strides and to let them know that it wasn't going to be easy to get over the line. But straight after a penalty from St Jude's Leigh Easts classy Stand-off showed his class when he scored wide out. Judes did well to regroup and a Superb try by Connor Parkinson, when after great work from Brett Taberner, Dave Walls, Nathan Moore, Nathan Bevan and Olumide Oladele had put Jude's in great field position were half backs Dean Hunt and Paul Pendlebury shipped the ball right  across the park to winger Nathan Jones were he unselfishly fed Connor Parkinson with a neat inside ball for him to score the first of his hat trick of tries. The Leigh Forwards upped their intensity to make yards from deep and along with silly penalties from Jude's gratefully accepted the easy yards with 2 quick tries to take a 16-12 half time lead. But this lifted the home side, who came out very determined to put it right in the second half and a dangerous run from Scott Robinson saw him feed Joey Brady with a great pass for him to score with inches to spare on the left, Robinson obliged with a touch line goal. Paul Pendlebury, Gavin Rodden, Nathan Bevan, Brett Taberner, Nathan Moore, Dave Fagan, Luke Barrett, Dave Walls and Barry Rothwell came into their own in the second period with some surging runs repeatedly taking play into Leigh's half. And it was from a storming charge over half way which set up a try for Connor Parkinson after Dean Hunt, Paul Pendlebury and Dave Carney had worked their magic again. With the game in the balance a breakaway attack by Easts saw Gavin Roddens fantastic cover tackle to catch Leigh's flying standoff and dump him into touch right on Jude's line. From then on Jude's confidence grew and they smelt victory was theirs. A powerful Paul Pendlebury run was halted just inches from the visitors line but Pauls determination found him with just enough energy to squeeze in for a match winning effort, Robinson slotted the two over. And in the dying seconds Jude's had the final say when hard working centre Connor Parkinson got his third to seal this cracking win.

A Team

Wigan St Jude's A took the trip to Oldham expecting a tough game against a feisty Fitton Hill team. Before the game got underway, an immaculately observed, one minute silence for a St Jude's Legend Eddie Moylett set the tone for the day.

As expected, right from the start the Fitton Hill team were very physical, ensuring the "postage stamp" sized pitch was used to force the majority of the early play right up the middle. Jude's forwards didn't give any ground, Barry Gregson, Alex Pilling, Ant Wilkinson, Michael Coleman and Danny Clayton all trading powerful drives and big defensive hits with the opposition. It was, however, loose forward Tye Forde who broke the deadlock, who, on 8 minutes came steaming onto short ball to rip through the defence and score an excellent try at the side of the posts. Rob Collier converted the first of his 6 kicks to give Jude's a 6-0 lead. Jude's interchange forward Liam McMenemy, Nathan Clarke, John Astle and Ramon Morley Samuels continued the go forward in this tough encounter, laying the foundations for Jude's back line to make the best of the limited pitch. A smart move from right to left found second row Alex Pilling running a perfect line, bursting through 2 defenders to notch up another try on his seasons tally. Rob Collier again converted to move the score to 12-0 just over 25 minutes into the game. Rob Collier was again quickly involved and created the space for Jude's next score, himself and fellow half back Simon Meehan marshalling the attack. Rob Collier took the ball on the right side, took on the defence, stepped around the centre into space and found second row Michael "eggy" Coleman running a superb supporting line up the middle of the pitch to score a great try right under the posts. The score was converted by Rob Collier 18-0. It wasn't one way traffic though, the Fitton Hill half backs were causing the Jude's defence some problems of their own, the defence had been solid until on 34 minutes the home team ran a move that saw their strong running loose forward take advantage of infrequent lapse in the defence to score a converted try under the posts. In typical fashion, showing the resilience that has taken this side to the Top of the division, Jude's responded immediately from the restart. The kick was hoisted high to the Fitton full back, who, with half an eye on the advancing Jude's team, misjudged the flight of the ball, the tremendous chase lead by Ramon Samuels saw him collect the ball from the bounce and dive over for a great opportunist try. Rob Collier converted. Just before the break the Fitton stand off dove over from acting half back to close the gap to 12 points. 24-12.

The second half started similarly to the first with both teams defending strongly and no further scores until the final quarter, a lapse in concentration saw Fitton close the gap to 6 points by beating two Jude's defenders in the right centre. The momentum was swinging to the hosts and it looks like the St Jude's team could be struggling to close the game out, when, a smart blind move from the base of the scrum initiated by Simon Meehan put powerful centre Adam Lavin away for a very well executed try. Rob Collier again converted to stretch the lead to 30-18.

It was a tense last 15 minutes after Fitton grabbed another score, leaving only 6 points separating the sides. With 10 minutes to goal penalty in centre field was coolly taken by Rob Collier to give a little breathing space. In the closing stages the kick and chase game for Jude's would run down the clock in perfect field positions ensuring that the 100% winning record was maintained. Final Score 32-24...Well done !!

Tries - Forde (1) , Pilling (1), Coleman (1), Samuels (1), Lavin (1).

In a really tough, forward dominated game, this was a real team effort. Man of the Match was stand off Rob Collier, tremendous displays from Danny Clayton and Alex Pilling.

Judes  14-0 Waterhead

Judes welcome Waterhead to the meadow for a tough draw for this round of the Lancashire Cup.  After an impeccably observed minutes silence for the sad passing of Judes ex Chairman Eddie Moylett, the fixture got underway with intensity from start to finish, both teams standing toe to toe in defence.  A relieving penalty for a high shot, gives Judes the territory needed to execute their first points when the ball was spread along the line to Eliot Peposhi who finished well over the whitewash.  Judes threw everything at Waterhead and should have been more points in front only for solid defence from Waterhead when Ryan broke down one wing and a good pass from Ben put Alfie down the other, only to be forced into touch from great covering tackles.  Junior steam rollered his way through the line today and proved hard to handle throughout the game, but all credit to Waterheads full-back who stood his ground to stop Junior, when normally he would run over them!  Waterhead knock-on close to their line which gifts Judes a scrum in a good position and quick thinking from Callum from the scrum base saw him scoot toward the line and dive over, only to be held up from yet more solid defence.  Both teams trade sets toward the end of the first half, both determined for the other not to score.  Judes were the stronger attacking side, but good Waterhead defence kept the score to only 4-0 first half.

It was game on for a mouth-watering second half.  Aggressive defences both sides force errors on the opening sets.  Judes finally capitalise when Reece goes on one of his searching runs, but brought down short.  Then Lewis goes sniffing for the right pass to Ryan Wood who spied a gap open up on the inside and darts for the line to score a relieving 4 points.  Waterhead reply with a break of their own, but Regan tracked all the way to bring him down.  Judes produced the defensive set of the game on their own line to deny Waterhead, the lads were hungry for this win and keep their opponents scoreless.  A good break from Ryan set the platform for our next points, when nothing looked on, but a long cross field kick on the last was taken by Harvey, although covered kept the ball alive well and good hands created the overlap for Alfie Whittle to fly off and dive over in the corner.  Good conversion from Callum Silcock put Judes 14 up without reply.  Judes really put their bodies on the line today defensively, triple repeat tackles from Junior, Ryan forcing the break-away player into touch, totally deserved the nil score-line.  In the final minutes of the game Callum spies his chance to notch up a fourth score, goes for the line for a second time, but just can’t ground it cleanly, if luck was on our side today the score would have been much higher.  A feisty final set, heard the final whistle go on an intense game before it tipped over the edge, with a celebrated 14-0 win to Judes.

An outstanding performance from the lads today to make their coaches  and parents extremely proud.  A game worthy of a cup final with the lads showing great camaraderie and giving everything they’ve got.  Unlucky not to record more points, but a fantastic arm wrestle to keep the score line nil against such as quality side.  Nice to see the full squad involved in the game, with some players helping out on the side-lines.  We are #TeamJudes12s we are family!

 Today’s Awards go to:

Outstanding Efforts:       Ryan Wood, who grew throughout the game, saved a try & scored one for himself.  Reece Stanton, threw himself about throughout the game, was massive in defence.

Assist Award:     Ben Freeman, nice to see Ben back to form after his accident, putting lads through with his passing and his line speed really caused our opponents problems today.

Top Tackler:        Kalan Devine, our captain fantastic who again put 110% in defence and really took charge with his crunching tackles!

Man of the Match:          Richard Nsemba, had half a dozen clean breaks today and really caused Waterhead problems, that good attacking prowess was matched with outstanding defence.

St Judes 0-3 Woolston

Today Judes entertained Woolston expecting a very hard match. Observing a minutes silence for Eddie Moylett at the start and both teams doing it impeccably.

Judes started with the ball and took it straight at Woolston with some great hard runs , driving Woolston  back to their own line but couldn't get over . Woolston  replied with some hard runs of their own , some great hands moving the ball about but the Judes defence held well .

The next few sets saw much of the same from both sides , great runs , great ball play , hard tackles and great team play by both sides .

Eventually  one team had to crack and Judes got beat down the outside edge by some speedy play and fast hands making it 0-1 to Woolston.

Judes weren't put off by this and kept the score at that until half time.

2nd half started and Judes were beaten twice more by some great hands from Woolston  but they weren't  down and out.

Judes muscled up in defence and kept the scoreline to 0-3 for the rest of the game . Judes just couldn't break the line today but showed some great determination and skill in defence to keep out the Woolston side .

Massive well done to all the Judes players today, you all played as a team and worked together , great game to watch and be involved in

St Judes 13-3 Newton storm

Judes entertained newton down at the meadow coming off the back of a semi-final defeat at Skegness the week before. The focus of today's game was getting the boys to understand to let the ball do the work, great effort from the boys and a very entertaining game to watch by the spectators. Lovely to see 7/8 yr old kids working as a team and seeing the ball moving along the line was very rewarding from a coaching perspective. Still lots to improve on and a late night watching the Wigan v Leeds game meant  a few tired heads and lacked are usual intensity in defence but the team is moving in the right direction, stand outs today were Cameron cooper and Zak beleki both scoring hat-tricks but I was more impressed with their defensive efforts, well done to all the kids.
