Match Reports - 14th & 15th October 2017

1st Team

Despite a great first half display by St Jude’s it just wasn’t enough to stop the Bradford Juggernaut from getting promotion to division one. Judes let a 22-16 lead go to a determined Bradford outfit as mistakes and penalties were heavily punished by the Yorkshire men. Great displays again by the young lads, Ben Fisher, not missed a goal kick in two games and two Man of the Match awards and Gary McMahon, good luck Gary In your new life as a Warrington player, you will be missed. Outstanding performance from Daz Ball who was moved to second row for the game and he scored two great tries, both needed some scoring. Jude’s forwards had a tough day,Luke Barrett, Paul Pendlebury, Nathan Bevan, and Robbie Horton never stopped. The final 15 mins was hard to bare and tough to watch as Bradford ran in 18 unanswered points and Jude’s promotion hope had gone. Jude’s had a very promising season and were always in the mix Martin and his staff used many players throughout the season which will benefit the club in the long run. Thanks lads for a great season. Can’t wait for our next challenge

Under 11’s

Wigan St Judes 16-26 Halton Hornets.

Today we played Halton, a team which up until this year had been in group A.

Judes reverted back to the side we saw a few weeks ago.  We didn't start strong and within minutes we were behind due to sloppy tackling.  Halton looked to stretch their lead and soon Judes were 0-16 down, with only a minute left in the half Lewis Banks carved an opening to break the flow of points.  At the break it was 6 - 16.

Right from the start of the second half, Halton were on the score sheet before Harry Stokes went over from short range twice and it looked like Judes were mounting a comeback.  This was short lived as an overzealous referee gave an unusual penalty to allow Halton to take advantage before the final whistle.

This seemed to be a game of two halves, with the second half being a much improved performance from the lads which may be attributed to a change in personnel.  Special mention to Muhammed on making his debut, running and tackling hard.

Once again the margin of two tries seeming to be the difference in games.

Wigan St Judes GOLDS U11s 30-10  Blackbrook Blues U11s

Today the lads travelled to St Helens to play the game we had all been waiting for. Since entering into the group, we had been told what a wonderful team The Blues are and knew, like us, they were yet to lose so we knew we were in for a cracking game and had really looked forward to meeting this team.

The game started badly for the Golds with a fumble from a short Brook kick aiming for touch and Brook found themselves in our half with a set of six. Our lads were not phased though and tackled with discipline and accuracy. Austin making a try saving tackle and holding a strong Brook forward up on the line to keep them off the score sheet. The Blues worked hard to pin us in at the turnover, tackling Big Mal and Elton better than any of this year's opposition but when the forwards can't make their way through, the backs always have a plan and to open today's scoring, full back Austin Daniel scooted and quickly shot across the line, with good support on each shoulder pressuring the Brook line, Austin threw a dummy to his eager runners and catching Brook off guard, slipped through. Putting his foot down and crashing over to take the first points of the day. Keegan Mobey converting.

Their tails were well and truly up now and it showed in their following defensive set, huge hits and great marker play forced an early kick that bobbled out into touch. Turning over just a metre from our own line we looked to the big lads to get us up field. One run was all it took and Big Mal stormed through the line to go the length and score beneath the sticks. Austin Daniel converting.

More outstanding defence followed with Brook storming forward and the lads giving all they had to grab hold of each powerful run. On their final run, Brook's talented full back decided to run it, slipping through our line and find himself one on one with our Austin. As always, Austin waited for the perfect strike and dove across, taking Brook's number 1 (and himself!) into touch. Perfect!
The forwards again drove the ball from danger and up past halfway, hooker Freddie Winnard scooted to hit Austin to his left, Austin travelled before finding half back Keegan Mobey who hit the Brook line before releasing a perfect flat ball out to an awaiting Mal Price (Randomly out on the wing! haha!) Who dove over for a well worked, lovely try. Dylan Gregory kicking with ease from wide left!

Our final try of the half came after another fantastic defensive set. Elton Paplekaj charged up field handing off three potential tacklers before being brought down just a few metres out. Tyler Foster spied his chance from the quick play, crossing the field ready to release the ball but spotting a gap under the sticks he put his foot down and crashed over himself. Elton Paplekaj adding the two.

To restart the game, Austin Daniel  kicked long down field and a fantastic chase found Brook under lots of pressure. One tackle in and great marker play from Elton saw the ball knocked on. Dylan Gregory ran perfect lines all game and going on the inside of Austin Daniel he straightened up at the perfect time and almost bagged himself a try for his efforts but was stopped just short. Dylan's charge had found us in a  great position though and in the next play Austin, seeing numbers out to his left, whipped the ball wide. An outstanding leap and collection in the air from Aaron Bolton saw him drop down and ground the ball for a classy and deserved try, Great play lads. Aaron also adding the two.

Again our kids fought hard in defence, with the weather getting better, the players were boiling and really had to give their all to keep out this talented Brook side. Finding themselves on the attack once more, the props made the hard yards up field with Malaki 'Paddy' Cullen and Sam Cunliffe dancing through in between to find ourselves in the final third once more. On the last play Austin looked to kick but changed direction at the final moment and sneaked through for his second and our sixth. Tyler Foster sailing the ball over for the extras

An ever relentless Brook pack pushed on once more and finally broke down our tired line, going over for their first of the game and deservedly so. Adding the two

Two quick final tries ended the game, firstly Big Mal wanting his hatrick took just one run to part the pack and go over under the sticks, the kick just sailing wide and Brook going over once more to end the game.

Since forming back in February we have never been this proud, every single player stepped up their game and needed to as although the scoreline may not reflect it, Brook were a fantastic and determined outfit who pressured our kids from start to finish. Our fullback Austin Daniel is renowned for his cover tackling skills but has never been tested to the limit that he was today, Brook broke our line more than any team ever have and each time he was there to clean up, stopping everything that came his way with precision and speed beyond his young years. A perfect performance that was reflected in today's awards. Firstly, bagging 'Hitman of the week' sponsored by Paul Gregory removals and then taking home all but one of our awards today. He deserved all the praise he received, a role model performance in a huge game. The opposition recognising Elton Paplekaj for his strength and determination rounded up today's awards.

Well done to all...same fixture next week at home!

Under 8’s - Golds

Crossfield vipers 2 vs St Judes u8s golds 12

St Jude's travelled to crossfields on a lovely Sunday morning.

It was a tough start to the game both sides looked ready. The 1st quarter Jude's showed off some great ball movement showing they can move the ball around the pitch with confidence. It soon led to a Jude's try from Jack Elwick and we were off! Crossfields couldn't respond as the Jude's wall was solid . Followed was a great set from our lads a charging run from Jack Myers saw us edging closer but it was Harrison Oaks who went in for the try. There was some hard hitting tackles from the Jude's lads with a cruncher from Mason Chisnall and Isac Fleming and Harrison oaks was cutting players in half. The quarter ended and Jude's showed some awesome rugby.

The 2nd set started with crossfields Decon Charnock and Oscar Roper put some hard hitting tackles in but crossfields crossed the line. The lads regrouped a powerful run from Cody Smith who offloaded to Aston Bailey who put his foot down but was stopped within inches. Nothing to worry about for are lads though as Tadgh Casey bulldozed straight through the line to score. Crossfields were in trouble now and Jude's we're not gonna let them through their defence was on form today. The lads pulled a further try out the bag a blistering run from Deacon Charnock saw us move down the field and Oscar Roper managed to Finish off with a try.  Tackles were big and hard today Tadgh Casey was holding up the back and no one was getting through and Cody Smith and Aston Bailey were putting in a shift on the front line. The quarter was coming to an end but it's not over till Deacon Charnock switches on the power pack and runs right through the team to score a corker of try.

St Judes were starting the quarter as we finished. A lovely set saw Deacon Charnock move the ball to Oscar Roper and out to Mason Chisnall to cross the line. Jack Myers and Jack Hill brought some big tackles to the crossfields lads and managed to keep them out a little longer. Jude's saw an opportunity to break the line and Harrison oaks weaved his was way through to put some more points on the score sheet. Crossfields managed to get some momentum and see a break in the unbreakable wall and they slipped through to score two cheeky little try's. To wrap up the quarter.

Crossfields started the last quarter with a tough hard hitting set and I'm sure the crossfields boys were feeling the big hits from Harrison Oaks, Jack Myers and Jack Hill. The Jude's lads were fired up you could see the determination in there faces. Another strong set from Jude's saw Jack Elwick get his 2nd of the game. This quarter was all about the defence every lad on the field put in some strong hard tackles. St Jude's were  running in and making yards and moved forward to send Mason Chisnall over the line. Cody Smith was next to cross the line using his body to push forward and slide over to get the ball down. Crossfields were going no further not one opportunity was given to let them through. The last set belonged to
Jude's a strong push forward and Cody Smith powered through their pack to score the final try.
