Match Reports - 11th & 12 March 2017

1st Team

Wigan st Judes first team ground out a hard fought 16-6 victory at the meadow against newly promoted Drighlington. The first half was a very tough affair with chances few and far between and both sets of forwards bashing anything that moved. Man of the Match Nathan Bevan was always keeping the visitors on their toes with several scooting runs from half back and he well deserved the award.Forwards Tom Owen, Dave Fagan, Brett Taberner, Oly Oladele and Leon Harber were well up for this game and Drighlington new it was going to be tough. Backs John Darbyshire,  Paul Pendlebury,  Barry Rothwell, Daz Ball and Nathan Jones tried hard to unlock a very tight Drighlington defence and you new they would eventually crack with Judes having their fair share of the ball and on 30mins Tom Owen hit the line and he flicked out a sweet pass to Paul Pendlebury who shot in by the posts, John Darbyshire slotted over the two. This was quickly followed by a Barry Rothwell try when he gathered his own grubber kick which kindly bounced for him and judes went in at the half 10 nil up. The second half was a carbon copy of the first very tight once again forwards on top for both teams Luke Barrett, Keiron Gaskell and Tye Forde came on as Judes rotated their forwards.  On 50 mins Paul Pendlebury found a bit of space where he put in a neat chip kick near the line were Conner Parkinson gladly accepted as he scored wide out,John Darbyshire goaled to give Judes a 16-0 lead. On 57 mins a massive brawl broke out and this changed the shape of the game slightly but Judes still had the upper hand just. Drighlington piled on the pressure and late on only for some brave last ditch tackles in particular Keiron Gaskells effort to hold up the Drighlington player on the line to save a certain score which at the time would have put the visitors in with a chance, the saying `Have Pride in your Try line` stands out.Drighlington did eventually get on the score sheet when after a very lucky bounce their scrum half dropped on a loose ball, but Judes were not going to lose this one and hopefully they will build on this hard fought win.

A Team

Wigan St Judes A opened their 2017 season with a superb victory over a tough, uncompromising  and well drilled Bury Broncos 1st team. In difficult pitch conditions, Judes played solid rugby, the forwards lead by captain Danny Clayton, Man of the match Chris Pimblett and prop Ryan Ainscough making excellent yardage up the Higher lane pitch slope. The heavy ground underfoot made it difficult for the Judes side to use their pace out wide, however, on 11 minutes, right winger Phil Cox picked up a pass and powered 10 metres to the line for the first of his brace of tries. Collier converted brilliantly from the touch line. 6-0.

Only 4 minutes later, good hands again across the field from Meehan, Gregson saw bullocking winger Cox picked up the ball again to beat the defence and go over in the corner. Again this was converted from right on the outer touchline by Collier. 12-0. Defences dominated for the remainder of the first half with great efforts from a non- stop Walls, Gregson, Clarke, Robinson and Lavin keeping the home side to a solitary try out wide on the right that look decidedly like a knock on. The final score of the half came from centre Barry Gregson who followed a break and chip through to collect the ball, throw an outrageous dummy to score under the posts. Collier converted. Half time score was 18-6 to Judes.

The second half saw Judes press the Bury line for large amounts of time, directed by replacement hooker Holland , Judes, on several occasions were only caught by a last gasp ankle tap preventing a sure score. As the game unfolded Judes defence remained strong, communicating and only being breached once which saw full back Danny Holmes pull off a fantastic try saving tackle under the posts. A penalty count of 10-3 to the home team and Judes Passion and desire spilled over into a full 26 man brawl that saw both teams lose players for 10 mins. Centre Adam Lavin warming the subs bench for his part in the battle. Evergreen scrum - half Dean Hunt entered the Fray with 25 mins to go and ran a superb cross field line, using two inside runners before slicing through the line for the only score of the second half. Collier converted making the final score 24-6 to Wigan St Judes A.

In all all round team effort, Man of the Match was last years players/ player of the year second row Chris Pimblett, 2nd Danny Clayton and 3rd Ryan Ainscough. Well done to all the boys!!

Next week Judes face a tough test against an unbeaten Leigh East A side and need to ensure the discipline is a focus in this week's sessions.

Under 15’s

Today we went to local rivals Shevy Sharks with 12 men and Big Es.

The lads defended very well in the opening stages of play. Judes got in good field position and Cameron Reilly crashed over the line and the extras were added to put Judes 6-0 up.

Shevy replied with a try of their own the conversion was missed taking the score 6-4. The lads pushed on with some top defence and found themselves in good territory and some quick thinking from Dougie allowed him to power his way over the try line for his first of the day (conversion missed). Taking the score to 10-4.

We again got up the field from strong running and hard hitting defence. With Dougie crashing over yet again from short distance and the conversion added made the score 16-4.

Just before half time Shevy posted a soft try on the scoreboard the kick which was missed some how took the score line to 16-8 at halftime.  Judes once again came out in the second half strong but it was Shevy who scored the first two scores of the second half to take the lead for the first time in the game with the score at 16-18.  Judes didn't let their heads go down or show any signs of tired limbs and battled on and got up the field and was unlucky not to score when Chunks worldie of an offload to Nathan was deemed a 'forward pass'. Eventually though Judes did manage to cross again with Dougie scoring his hat trick through sheer power and determination for his third meat pie of the day.

Judes felt sure it was going to be their day but in the closing stages of the game shevy equalized with a dubious try the conversion was missed and the remaining two minutes of the game vanished and that was time.

The final score was honours even with 22-22.

Tries; Cam and Dougie 3, Conversions Owen 3/4 .

Great game lads to be involved in with some cracking defense on show.

Wigan St Judes 6-60 Golborne Parkside

First game of the regular season saw Golborne make the trip over to Parsons Meadow.  After both having games postponed the previous week, both teams were looking to hit the ground running.  Golborne managed to do that a little easier than Judes did.  They managed to break Judes down after the 4th or 5th tackle and posted 30 unanswered points before the break.  Judes seemed to switch on after half time as they got a little more temper in them.  They managed to force mistakes, hold Golborne out for sets and complete the tackles that they weren't making in the first half.  Judes try came from a superb kick off from Leon that Dylan chased with pace and got his hands on the ball after a rare switch off from Golborne.  All in all, the boys know what they need to work on and realise they did it the tough way with only a bare 13 to work with.  We are immensely proud that they never gave in!! We fix it in training lads.

Orrell St James  8-24 Judes

Judes travel the short distance to the newly promoted Orrell St James, not knowing what to expect and Orrell proved why they deserve to be in the premiership and were really up for this game.  Judes struck first with more football skills than rugby skills after a loose ball was hoofed across the pitch by a number of players then kicked onto to Alfie Whittle who gathered and scored in the corner.  Our following try came again from a kick that Orrell couldn’t take cleanly, which gave Judes good territory for Harvey Makin to do what he does best and go crashing over the whitewash.  Orrell gained some good field position after Judes were forced into touch and they capitalised by using their 2 tall players who used their height to their advantage to go in for 4 points.  The next period saw a scrappy patch from Judes making too many errors and gifting Orrell the ball, but equally good defence on show to deny Orrell any more points and brilliantly forced them over the side line.  From the resulting scrum Harvey breaks from the base and puts in a superb offload to Alfie Whittle who backed himself and was off like a rocket down the wing, no-one got anywhere near him and he brings the ball back under the sticks for an easier kick.  Conversions taken by James Richardson.  There was just enough time for a restart and Orrell put in a great kick that was dead in goal and forced a dropout, Judes were equally up to the task and forced the ball loose before the whistle goes for half time at 4-16.

Judes start the second half on the attack and a set move puts Ryan through and looked sure to score, but a great tackle from Orrell denies him just short of the line.  This only delayed the inevitable and Judes scored an awesome try with the forward driving up the middle, showing great support play and keeping the ball alive until Junior off-loaded to Reagan Hunter who scored the first of 2 back to back tries.  His second came from a ball slipped out from Harvey in the tackle and again good hands on show to keep the ball alive to Reagan who knew his way to the try line.  Orrell kept playing until the final whistle and threw everything at Judes in the final period.  Their first break was cut down by a good covering tackle from Reece, but continued pressure saw their tall lad spy his opportunity and stride over to score.  Judes finish on the attack, but time runs out and Judes claim the victory 8-24.

Great team performance today and good to see all the squad getting on the pitch.  Judes had moments of brilliance, but couldn’t play with their usual flair, due to good defensive pressure from our opponents.  Great individual efforts from Alfie who scored the game breaking try, Reagan, impressive in attack and Eliot who was excellent in defence.  Well done boys, another 2 points in the bag!

Today awards go to:

Outstanding Efforts: Reagan Hunter, bossed the second half with tries scored and was good at the back gathering and returning kicks.  Scored the try of the season so far.

Kalan Devine, was magnificent up the middle today, remarkable captain always talking to his players.

Man of the Match: Alfie Whittle, chosen by OSJ, saying he was the fastest player in the world!  Our speedster knows his way to the try line, looking to score at every opportunity.

Wigan St Judes 24-32 Latchford

Down at the meadow today was our first home game of the season.

A lacklustre and illness ridden Judes welcomed our visitors Latchford who races into an early 16 -0 advantage, even though efforts from Rohan Green, Lewis Banks and Max Jones were unable to make any impressions as Judes' defense was sadly lacking.  Harry Stokes being the stalwart that he is was first in the line to make the tackle with the other lads following up.  Other stand out players of this half was Sam Young before unfortunately being forced off with injury.  At the break it was 16-0 to the visitors.

The second half saw Judes come to life overturning a points deficit with tries from Freddie Boylan, Harry Stokes with a great solo effort, a brave drive from James Molyneux saw us get onto an even keel with the visitors, only for Latchford to keep pegging us back with a final try from Kian Stanton making the final score 24-32.

It seems that our problems from last year are resurfacing which are that we don't come out of the blocks from the off.  We need to be starting games as well as we finish them or we will continue to have mountains to climb.

Well done boys - lets press on.

Wigan St Judes  Maroons u9s 11 -1 Chester u9s

Judes blew away the cobwebs after a long pre season and started well with a win vs Chester. From the start the passing was causing Chester problems with the wingers having a good day at the office. Great work from all the kids who looked as though they enjoyed getting back out playing again. great ball handling in slippery conditions and some well worked team try's. All coaches and parents very happy.

Under 8’s - Maroons

Wigan st judes u8s maroons  10-6  Leigh east bears

It was the 1st game of the season at home with some nervous kids and coaches.

The game started off really strong with both sides really up for it. It was leigh east to score 1st but judes return the favour with a darting run from Ellis putting judes on the scoreboard. Leigh's number 3 hit back for there second, but judes battle on with some great passing which went through 3 sets of hand to then find jack Worthington scoring in the corner. Judes then held leigh east out with their next set of 6, it was then back in the hands of the home side a good set again with passing to then find Ellis over for his 2nd. Leigh wasn't impressed going behind and hit hard with a try from there number 6. Last set of the break and it was that kid Ellis again going  over for his hat trick.

As teams switched ends to start again it was leigh east who went over the line 1st. The ball was back with the judes and it was new boy Billy baxter who scored the 1st try of many, with Billy's  try under the belt it was defence now and keeping  leigh out with a try saving tackle from Billy got judes the ball back. Judes with ball in hand again awesome offloads to keep that ball alive and from know we're came Billy again over for his 2nd. Leigh east never let their heads drop and come back again with a try from there number 10.

Judes started there next set struggling to break through Leighs great defence, but then it was Finleys turn with a few steps and then a gap, finley went over for his contribution. With the kids getting  a little tired and gaps in the defence Leigh's number 7 went over making the 6 tryst for them. Back with the home side the ball was still being passed about well and luke went over for judes 8th try. With just 2 points in it judes knew they needed to tackle and they did keeping  out leigh east with their set of 6. Back with judes and it was a 3rd try for new kid Billy. Judes again stood strong on defence like a brick wall stopping yet another set of 6 from leigh east. Now it was the final set of the game and it was judes with the ball, they knew they had the win in the bag but they didn't stop and it was Lewis who closed the game with a final try.

Great performance for all 11 kids today really outstanding.

Under 8’s - Golds

Wigan St Jude's Golds 9-5 Leigh miners

It was Jude's 1st home game of the season against a good Leigh miners team who were 1st over the line to score the 1st try of the game, their defence was very good to keep Jude's out in their 1st set of 6. The boys then woke up and turned on to keep miners out, it was Chiz 1st over for Jude's with some good yards put in from Jack Hill allowed Tadgh Casey over again for Jude's.

2nd quarter saw Big Jack burst through the miners defence to score, the boys then turned up the defence with some outstanding tackles from Tadgh Casey, Harrison Oakes and Jack Myers! Next over the line for Jude's where Harrison Oakes and a brilliant try for Cody Smith

3rd quarter saw Jude's keep up the defence, then came up Gabe Mills who saw a gap in miners to dive over the tryline to score his very impressive 1st try of the season. Our boys then got a little complacent to let miners through with a try but Tadgh stepped up to score his 2nd of the game, some good runs put in from Kyle Wakelin

Last quarter Chiz went straight in for his 2nd try of the game, this quarter saw some great defensive skills from Archie Unsworth and Aston Bailey, then it was Jack Myers turn to score Jude's final try of the game
