Match Reports - 10th & 11th June 2017

1st Team

As games go I can honestly say the first half was as good as it's gets  for St Jude's who's total domination and execution was there for all to see as they ran in  30 unanswered points in a blistering performance well led by the boot of Rob Collier who cleverly used the conditions to his advantage with two 40/20s and 5 goals in the game were any mistakes by Drighlington were well punished by Jude's to win 31-22. On 7 mins lively Hooker Nathan Bevan spotted a gap which set up field position for scrum half Baz Rothwell to sneak in by the posts ,Rob Collier goaled. The early exchanges by Jude's did look good  and Nathan Jones who had plenty to do with Drighlingtons early pressure was solid and when needed Oladele Oladele, Luke Barrett and Man of the Match Gavin Rodden  had lots of go forward to keep Drighlington on their toes. Backs Baz Rothwell and Rob Collier were working well and every opportunity they had they would ship the ball wide. On 25 mins  hardworking prop Luke Barrett hit the line of a short pass and broke free and went on a 40 meter surging run to set up field position for quick hands from Baz Rothwell and Rob Collier to Gavin Rodden who put in a neat flick pass to winger Joey Brady who scored wide out and the reliable Rob Collier slotted over the two under very windy conditions. Minutes later Rob Collier was heavily involved in Judes next score when he intercepted a loose pass from a Drighlington attack to set up field position for Gavin Rodden to score a great try, once again the Boot of Rob Collier was in action  two to give Jude's a 18-0 nil lead . A Drighlington penalty was punished when hard working Paul Pendlebury hit the line hard to feed loose forward Dave Fagan who wasn't going to be stopped from close range, once again the reliable Rob Collier slotted over the two points. In the closing mins of the first half another Quick attack by St Jude's saw Baz Rothwell and Paul Pendlebury find Strong running centre Connor Parkinson who put Winger Daz Ball away to score a great try, the reliable boot of Collier did the rest for a 30-0 half time lead. Forwards Paul Pendlebury, Nathan Bevan , Olumide Oladele , Luke Barrett and Dave Fagan were outstanding in all departments  and Connor Parkinson,(who twice saved two certain tries when Drighlington were slowly getting back in the game). The second half was a complete different story, the only points was a drop goal by Collier and a change like you've never seen when Drighlington totally changed and Judes were always on the back foot and Drighlington slowly getting back in the game, but you sensed that hopefully time would be against them and Judes first half was enough to get this excellent win away were not many teams would come here and score 30 points.

A Team

Wigan St Judes welcomed Bury Broncos down to The Meadow with both sides wanting to cement their play off chances with a win.

It was the home side who started really well and with all the early pressure it was the big fella Nath Moore who took the opening try goal by Robinson, Judes lapse in concentration and a couple of penalties for good measure Bury levelled the scores, Judes hit back with Scott Robinson who added the extras with Judes still on cloud nine a short kick off caught Judes napping leaving the scores 12-10 on stroke of half time Robinson hit a penalty to leave it 14-10 at the break.

With conditions reminding you of a miserable night in January Judes started the half with back to back tries from Robinson and Gibson pushing the score to 26-10, Judes had there chances to put the game to bed but Bury kept knocking at the door and with a clever kick from the scrum saw them race the length of the field. 26-16 game on Judes weathered a mini storm and it was the supporting u18's player Ben Fisher who scored by the posts for Robinson to goal, Bury got one back making it a 10 point ball game but Judes where in no mood to let this one slip and turned the screw in the final quarter with Gregson Ainscough and Bevan eating the metres up the gaps started to appear the twinkle toed fullback Darryl King nipping in Robinson kicking the extras, Bury seemed to be losing there first half momentum and it was player of the month Barry Gregson who went through there middle unit like an hot knife through butter to score a 50 yard special Robinson added the extras, with minutes remaining it was MoM Scott Robinson who turned the Bury defence inside out to score in the corner for his well taken hat trick to leave the score 48-22 to the home side.

Woolston 22 v Wigan St Judes 4

A resurgent Judes team went over to Warrington to try and put things right from the friendly before the season. The boys certainly did that. First half was extremely even with Woolston scoring a try from the base of the scrum and quick hands pulling our line out of place. Half time 10-0. Judes felt this game was there for the taking and started the second half very much the same way, great line speed and tough tackles which stunned Woolston and forced them into errors. Judes managed to build some pressure by restricting Woolston metres and then forcing a knock on, from the resulting scrum Dylan Keller went over to score. The boys were ready for more and the signs were encouraging throughout the game. Unfortunately we stopped the game with 5 minutes to go due to a head injury to a Woolston player. All at Wigan St Judes wish you a speedy recovery!

Well done today Judes, outstanding effort, everyone and the team reached the goals I set. Very pleased and onwards and upwards now!

Judes  48  v  Orrell St James  6

Judes welcome Orrell St James to the meadow on this very windy summers day!  Fantastic opening defence from Reece really sets the tone of the match with some big hits from Judes.  Orrell kick at the end of their set which was taken by Lewis sitting at full-back, who accelerated and just cut through the defence like butter and sped off to the try line.  Judes really got in the face of Orrell defensively and were soon turning the ball over to attack.  Junior headed for the line and was over, but strength from Orrell held him up.  It just delayed the inevitable and hands down the line to James Richardson who threw a dummy at the defence to shoot through and score.  Both these lads deserved tries in the game as both ran strongly and matched it with great defence.  Firstly, Callum Silcock who stormed his way through the defence knocking them down like 9 bins to score, then Junior Nsemba, stepped up and used his long stride and only had the fullback to beat which he did with ease.  James Richardson & Callum Silcock took conversions respectively.  Orrell only had one break the entire half and good tracking and bringing down by Ryan kept the opponents scoreless at half time, going in at the break 22-0.

Orrell were awarded a penalty for offside from a kick early second half, but they didn’t judge the conditions very well and failed to find touch, putting Judes in attack in their half.  Junior Nsemba took full advantage of the territory and made it look easy to stride in and go under the sticks to record his second.  Judes had a momentary lapse in concentration and Orrell kick off and regather and after a further penalty for holding down, gives them the number of tackles required to build momentum and score a converted try under the sticks.  Judes finished the game with attacking flourish and started to really move the ball about allowing Reece Stanton the space he needs to use his strength, running over defenders to score 2 well-deserved tries.  After a penalty for the second spear tackle in the game Judes set up and got the ball to Ryan Wood who weaved his way through the middle, looked covered, but still managed to reach over and score.  Judes finished on a great set after a good kick and chase from Lewis, pinned Orrell back and gave Harvey Makin the chance to do his thing and run at defenders and crash over the line.  Conversions taken by a variety of players James Richardson, Callum Silcock, Leon McIntosh and Junior Nsemba, ended the game 48-6.

Another top performance by Judes today, considering the number of players out and change in team dynamics.  Strong performances from a number of players setting the tone of the game and finding gaps across the park.  Spoilt for choice for awards today, well done lads and keep up the hard work!

Today’s Awards go to:

Outstanding Effort: Junior Nsemba, had taken a lot of stick this week from the opposition players he knew, but he got on the pitch and showed them who’s boss!  Great game apart from the dodgy conversion at the end! haha

Outstanding Effort: Ryan Wood, great commitment and try saving tackle to deny Orrell more points, ran strongly and scored a superb try

Man of the Match: Callum Silcock, no contest for this award today, Callum just ran and ran at the opposition knocking them flying! Passing and tackling was also superb and got himself on the scoresheet to

Rylands Tiger Sharks 30 V Wigan St Judes 24

After a run of losing games, Judes were looking to get back on track at Rylands today.

The first half saw Judes go behind shortly after kick off by allowing Rylands to step inside a shirt grab. Judes re-grouped and soon started to play some good rugby.  It was Rohan Green who unlocked the Rylands defence then converted his try to bring us level. Once again we allowed Rylands to open us up to regain their lead before Kian Stanton bossing the left side and Rylands struggling to handle, crossed for our second try.  This was followed by a returning Sam Young drawing in the Rylands defence to check back in side to go over and at the break it was Judes in the lead 12 - 16.

The second half saw the boys really play well with runs from Cody Newton and Freddie Boylan taking on the Rylands defence which drew them in to give James Molyneux the space to go over.  With Max Jones marshalling Judes' defence and Deecan Snape covering any gaps at the back, Judes looked to be on top.  Rylands mounted a big comeback effort which Callum Davies countered very well but a tired Judes couldn't keep them out.  A cheeky chip and chase by Rohan Green saw Judes back on top, that was until we had a couple of unfortunate incidents which saw Rylands latch on to a stray pass, scoring a full length try with a bit of help from an obstruction.

At the final whistle Rylands had snatched the game at 30 -24.

This game was the best game we have seen the lads play in a while, they never let their heads drop and played with more conviction!

Well done boys this showed that with some players out or missing we have the skills still to play at the highest level.

Awards this Week :-

Under 11’s - Golds

Widnes St Maries U11s 6 Wigan St Judes Golds U11s 28

Today the lads travelled to Widnes. Widnes were the first team we ever played since forming so the kids were excited to play them again.

New man and lightening winger, Sam Cunliffe, opened the scoring with a fantastic try down the wing. Judes backs working the ball down to him, showing good control and quick hands and Sam pushing forward to score his very first Judes try! The kick sailing just wide 0-4 to The Golds.

We had asked the kids to make sure that our forwards worked from the back today and that we didn't play any easy 'crash' rugby. Telling them if they wanted a try they'd have to produce something special from our own half. Big Mal Price did not disappoint and made two devastating full lengthers back to back to ensure his name was on the score sheet.  His efforts converted with ease by centres Elton Paplekaj and Dylan Gregory. Stretching the Judes lead by another 12 points, sending us in at halftime in front 16 nil.

Halftime  0-16

A good chase from the kick off and great defensive set saw an early turnover and a huge drive from Malaki 'Paddy' Cullen saw him just inches from scoring his first try, just pipped back he jumped up for a quick play, half back Keegan Mobey flew across the line drawing the defence in before  an amazing pass out wide to Sam Cunliffe who ran an inside line and dove over for his second of the match. Keegan Mobey adding the extras 0-22

Widnes went on to score their first and only try next, the referee had mistakenly allowed play to continue before getting back to set the defensive line and the Judes kids simply had no idea that the game had continued. The ref and the Widnes coaches could only apologise for this error - not the end of the world and good to see the excitement of the resilient Widnes pack managing to get one past our solid defence. 6-22

Dusting themselves down following the poor decision, Judes pushed forward once more. Good drives from Dylan Gregory and Aron Fleming and amazing support from new addition, Tyler Foster saw both Aron and Tyler inches from bagging their own tries. Finding themselves on the Marie's line once more, Austin scooted the ball running across the line and nipping through the smallest of gaps to get his share of the spoils. A well deserved try after a inspirational shift at full back. Sam Cunliffe adding the two.

Final Score: 6-28 to the Judes.

We were far from our best today but to only concede one try after an under par performance says it all about this team. They play rugby with skill far beyond their young years and even on an off day produce performances that have the opposition coaches applauding in appreciation. Freddie Winnard, Austin Daniel and Keegan Mobey ran great lines, controlled the attacking play and confused the defence with their quick plays. Mal Price, Elton Paplekaj, Daniel Nanyn and Dylan Gregory worked hard at marker, pressuring every kick and forcing error after error and the new lads blended well like they had always been with us!

Keep it up lads, you do us, your parents and your club proud!

Under 8’s - Golds

St Jude's Under 8's Golds 52-16 Ashton Bears

Captain for the day was Tadgh 'The Terror' Casey

Golds started the match just as the coaches had asked at training, from the word go!  Some powerful tackles from Jack Myers and Harrison kept the Bears out, with the response from the Golds a bursting try from Kyle. Bears again threw some nifty footwork in to attempt to break the Golds defence but Captain Tadgh stepped up with some strong tackles keeping them out again.  A try from Aston came from a pass from Jack Myers and some great footwork from Aston to leave the defence behind.  Golds back on the defence frustrated the Bears by keeping them out and the quarter ended with a cross field run from Jack Myers leaving the score at Golds 3, Bears 0.

Jude's started with the ball in the 2nd quarter and some lovely passing from Big Jack and Jack Myers saw Little Chiz score his first of the game.  Leading the boys Tadgh again put in some crunching tackles backed up by Jack Myers going low and Big Jack wrapping the ball up. Passes from Cody to Isaac then Gabe, saw the mighty atom make nearly a full length run to be tackled just short of the line.  This was a great set up  for Tadgh  to finish using a great step and run.  As done in training the Golds line was moving up together and gave no way through with some big hits from Jack Elwick, Chiz and Cody.  The boys worked hard on their passes and the ball went from Tadgh, to Jack Myers to Little Chiz who still had work to do to go over for his second.  The end of the quarter saw the Bears go over for their first of the match.

Ashton started as they had finished and even though some big hits had gone in from Deacon, Jack Elwick and Jack Hill, Golds couldn't keep them out.  The response was a charging run from Cody.  The Bears tried hard to put him down but he was not going to be stopped from claiming his try.  From the restart the boys worked again at their passing with Jack Elwick passing to Jack Hill.  The partnership of Hilly and Chiz struck again when Jack passed to Chiz who went over for number three.  The Bears showed some great running but the boys were determined to keep them out and again crunching tackles from Deacon, Jack Elwick and Hilly kept them from going over.  From the centre line the play started again and a pass from Jack Hill to Harrison saw him side step the defence and go over for Gold's ninth.  The game was now 9-2 to the Gold's.

Final quarter and Judes were not letting up.  Pass from acting half back Gabe to Chiz out to Hilly who still had work to do but he was strong and determined getting over the line to starting the scoring again.  Ashton weren't going to give up though.  The next set saw tackles from Big Jack and Deacon stop their runs.  Moving as a line Jude's Gold's gave the Bears know where to go. The Ball being wrapped up consistently by Cody and Big Jack.  Ashton somehow found a gap and the runner went straight through and over to give Ashton their third of the match.  The winning mindset the boys had today showed when Big Jack carried three of the bears players before tackle complete and the passing from Aston, Harrison and Hilly finally let Chiz go over for try number four.  Defence needed to be strong again and going into three man tackles were Cody, Deacon and Isaac.  The line stayed strong and kept the Bears out again.  Working the ball out from the start the passing from Aston to Chiz then a little off load to Hilly saw him go over.  Ashton were not going to give up and despite another strong defence from the team, Ashton went over.  The final set of six saw some great passing again from Gold's.  Chiz to Harrison and finally, using his strength, Big Jack Elwick got the final try
